These Kockney Koi filter media bags provide a practical way to contain loose material inside a suitable pond filter. Each bag measures approximately 50 × 80cm, and the pack contains four bags. They let you organise compatible media into separate, accessible portions rather than leaving every piece loose in the filter chamber.

The bags are supplied empty. They are containers for your chosen filter media, rather than a complete biological filter or a treatment in their own right. Choose the contents for the requirements of your pond equipment, then check that the bag retains those pieces while allowing water to pass through the intended filtration route.

The dimensions describe the bag itself, not the space a filled bag will occupy. Its final shape depends on the amount and shape of material placed inside. Measure the filter compartment, its opening and the route through which you will lift the bag before deciding how much to load. Leave sufficient room to close the filter and reach any fittings that need regular attention.

Match the bag to the media

Check your actual media against the mesh before filling all four bags. Small granules, broken fragments and dust may need a different retaining arrangement from larger pieces. Do not assume that a bag suitable for one material is equally suitable for every powder or fine filter additive. Follow the instructions for the media as well as those for the filter.

For biological-media choices, compare Kockney Koi Kintama Gold Bio Balls and Aqua Source Kano ceramic filter media. Their different shapes and quantities should be considered alongside the retaining mesh and available chamber space. A shared description such as biological media does not make every material interchangeable in a particular filter.

Positioning within a filter

Use the bags only where the equipment permits contained media. Keep them away from pump impellers, moving parts and narrow outlets where loose fabric could obstruct the flow. Support the filled bag appropriately in the chamber and check that water follows the intended route through the media rather than simply bypassing a tightly packed bundle.

Do not use a media bag to restrain the contents of a chamber designed to keep its media moving freely unless the equipment manufacturer specifically permits that arrangement. For example, Evolution Aqua K+ Filter Media must be used in accordance with the requirements of the system it is fitted to. A bag is a maintenance accessory, not a substitute for the filter’s prescribed operating method.

Loading and handling

Divide a heavy media load into manageable portions. The pack of four allows you to organise more than one section, but it does not establish a maximum safe lifting weight. Wet media can be awkward to handle, so plan how each filled bag will be supported and removed before placing it in an inaccessible corner.

Inspect the mesh and seams before use and close each bag securely after filling. Keep sharp edges, damaged media and protruding fittings from rubbing against the fabric. When lifting a filled bag, support its contents rather than pulling on one small area of mesh. Stop and reduce the load if the bag is difficult to lift or appears under strain.

Cleaning the bag and its contents

Inspect the outside of the mesh during normal filter maintenance. Deposits can accumulate around a bag even where the media inside still looks clean. Follow the filter’s isolation and cleaning instructions before removing components, and keep track of the original position so the water route can be restored correctly.

Different media need different care. Established biological media should not be treated like an empty plastic container that can be scrubbed with household detergent. Follow the media manufacturer’s instructions and avoid unnecessarily disturbing the whole biological stage at once. Where a gentle rinse is appropriate, removed pond water can be used without introducing household cleaning residues.

Checking the system after maintenance

Before restarting, check that bags are closed, supported and clear of the outlet. Refit covers and connections according to the equipment instructions, then observe the flow as the system returns to service. A new bag should not conceal a blockage or make routine access to a valve, basket or drain difficult.

Keep checking pond water quality after significant changes to biological media. Organised media is easier to handle, but the bag itself does not establish beneficial bacteria or correct ammonia and nitrite problems. Review the filter’s operation, fish load and maintenance routine together, and use water-test results to assess the system after alterations.
