Build a feeding routine around the pond
Measure water temperature in the pond. Begin with small portions and watch what is eaten before adding more. Reduce feeding when appetite falls or water quality deteriorates. Increase the ration gradually as conditions improve, particularly after a quiet winter period or a change to the filter.
Check that smaller or quieter fish receive food as well as the most active feeders. For sinking food, observe the area below the surface. Count any treats within the daily ration and remove uneaten food.
Pack size and freshness
Choose a quantity that can be used while fresh. A larger pack is useful only if it suits the feeding rate and can be stored correctly. Litres measure volume and kilograms measure weight; compare declared food weights where possible. Keep food sealed, cool and dry, use a dry scoop and follow the pack’s best-before date.

Which Burtons foods sink?
Growth Sinking and Winter Sinking are sinking koi foods. The separate Sturgeon food also sinks. Choose between them by species and feeding conditions: sinking behaviour alone does not make a growth diet suitable for cold water.
What is the difference between Wheatgerm and Winter Sinking?
Wheatgerm is a 6 mm floating food with 37% protein and 6% fat, positioned around 8–10°C. Winter Sinking is a 6 mm sinking food with 37% protein and 8% fat, intended above 7°C. They are separate recipes with different feeding behaviour.
Is Burtons Health Food a probiotic or a medicine?
Its ingredient declaration includes glucans. That does not establish that it contains live probiotic microorganisms, and it should not be presented as a disease treatment. Choose it as food and investigate water quality or fish health problems separately.
Can I use the same Burtons food for koi and sturgeon?
Use the dedicated Sturgeon food for sturgeon and sterlet. In a mixed pond, check that sinking pellets reach them rather than being intercepted by koi. Match the 4.5 mm or 8 mm option to the fish.
Can Burtons pellets go in an automatic feeder?
Check the feeder’s permitted pellet size and format, then test several portions with the exact food. Keep the hopper dry and confirm that all intended fish can reach the dispensed ration.
