A two-wire perimeter deterrent for herons and cats around garden ponds

The Velda Pond Protector creates an electrified boundary around a pond to discourage herons and cats from approaching the water. Its energiser sends pulses through the fence wire, producing a shock response when an animal touches it. The standard kit provides 80 metres of wire for a double fence around up to 40 metres of pond edge.

This is an active perimeter system for a planned installation. It is worth considering when you want to keep the main water surface open for viewing, feeding and maintenance, rather than covering it with a net. Choose the approach that suits your pond layout and the people and animals using the garden; protection depends on the installation, its condition and how the pond can be approached.

What comes in the kit?

The black stakes carry two runs of wire at different heights. The lower run is intended to deter cats and small animals, while the upper run addresses herons and other birds approaching from the pond edge. Use the supplied system as described in the instructions; ordinary string and unverified replacement components are not substitutes for its conducting wire and electrical connections.

Measure the boundary, not the pond volume

The 40-metre figure describes the length of pond edge that can be surrounded with two wires. It does not describe a pond’s area, depth or water capacity. Before ordering, walk the intended route with a tape measure, including bends and any sections that must be moved away from paving or planting. Measuring just the longest side will not tell you whether the kit covers the complete installation.

A curved pond can have a surprisingly long perimeter. Also consider where you need access for a net, feeding, pump removal or plant maintenance. Sketching the layout makes it easier to identify awkward corners and decide whether an electric boundary is practical around the whole pond. Keep the route clear and easy to inspect so that routine checks do not require climbing over the wires.

Installation points from the Velda manual

Velda specifies a maximum spacing of 4 metres between stakes, with the upper eye facing towards the pond and the lowest eye approximately 15cm above the ground. The two wire runs must remain electrically connected. Position the energiser in its holder in a dry location within 4 metres of the fence, and install the earth connection as instructed.

Keep access and everyday maintenance in mind

Plan the fence alongside the way you actually use the pond. A route that crosses your normal standing place may become inconvenient when checking fish or emptying a skimmer. Think about visitors, children, pets and anyone maintaining the garden, rather than treating the boundary as something only the pond owner needs to know about.

Velda instructs users to make others aware of the electric fence and to switch it off temporarily while people are working nearby. Provide proper access and follow the manual’s warnings; do not climb through or over an energised multi-wire fence. Keep the instructions available so that another person looking after your pond understands how the system is arranged.

Check the fence as the garden changes

Plants grow, edging moves and maintenance equipment is taken in and out of the pond. Include the fence in your regular garden inspection, particularly after pruning, strong winds or work around the water. Look for loose supports, damaged connections and vegetation contacting the wire. An initially neat installation still needs attention as the surrounding garden changes through the seasons.

The energiser has an indicator light that flashes with its pulses, and the manual describes an audible ticking sound during operation. Familiarise yourself with normal operation when the kit is first installed. If something changes, switch off and check the manual rather than assuming that a wire still in position means the complete system is working correctly.

Electric perimeter fencing or a pond cover net?

These products serve different practical needs. The Pond Protector deters animals at the boundary while leaving the water surface open. A cover net spans the pond and can also intercept leaves.
