Pontec Decoy Heron Pond Figure

A lifelike pond-side ornament with a supplied fixing peg

The Pontec Decoy Heron brings the familiar outline of a standing heron to the edge of a garden pond. Its long legs, upright neck and grey feather detailing make it a distinctive feature among marginal plants or beside a planted bank. It combines a decorative pond figure with a visual deterrent that can support a wider pond-protection arrangement.

This is Pontec reference 36868, measuring 50cm long, 17cm wide and 76cm high. A fixing peg is included. It is a static figure: there is no pump, lighting, motion sensor or water jet to connect. For other approaches to keeping visiting predators away from fish, browse our pond heron and predator protection range.

Use the overall measurements when planning its position, allowing room around the projecting head and beak rather than measuring only the space occupied by the feet. The height makes it visible above many low pond-edge plants, although taller summer growth may screen it. Check the view from your patio or usual seating position before deciding where to secure it.

Using a decoy as part of pond protection

A decoy is a visual presence rather than a physical barrier across the pond. It cannot prevent a bird from reaching the water, and the response of visiting wildlife can vary. For that reason, do not rely on the figure alone where fish are already being taken. Consider how the pond can be approached and whether a suitable physical barrier is needed as part of the overall arrangement.

Keep observing the pond after installing any deterrent. If a visiting heron continues to feed, the fact that a decoy is in place does not mean the pond is protected. Reassess the practical access points and choose additional measures suited to the shape of the pond. Where visits continue, give priority to preventing access to the fish.

Choosing a position around the pond

Choose a stable location where the figure can stand securely and be seen. A border beside the pond can work well as an ornamental setting, particularly where the grey colouring sits naturally with stones and foliage. Keep it clear of the area where you stand to feed fish, lift filter lids or remove a pump for cleaning. It should not make routine pond care awkward.

Take particular care with lined ponds. Do not drive the fixing peg through a liner, concealed pipe or cable. Check the ground before inserting it and use an appropriate position outside any vulnerable lined area. A thin layer of gravel can hide the liner underneath, so the visible surface alone is not enough to establish that a location is suitable.

Test stability before leaving the figure in place. Loose stones, very soft soil and steeply sloping banks can allow a tall ornament to lean or fall. Leave sufficient clearance from paths, steps and play areas, and avoid a position where the projecting parts become an obstacle. Follow the assembly information supplied with the product when fitting its components and peg.

Combining it with other pond accessories

The decoy can sit within a broader pond-edge design rather than occupying the middle of an otherwise open bank. Planting, stones and other ornaments can help it look at home, but keep access to equipment and the water clear. If protective netting is fitted, position the figure so it does not stretch, snag or hold the net away from its intended supports.

For a different kind of visual deterrent, compare the Pontec PondoScare Spinner. The spinner and the heron figure work in different ways and have different installation needs. Compare the space, fixing position and effect of each option in your own pond.

Cleaning, checks and seasonal care

Include the figure in your normal checks around the pond. Confirm that it remains upright, that its fixing is secure and that growing plants have not pushed against it. After strong wind or work around the border, check its position again. Remove fallen leaves and accumulated dirt gently so the surface detail remains visible.

Use water and a soft cloth or brush for routine cleaning, taking the figure away from the pond if any cleaning product is used in accordance with its care guidance. Prevent residues from entering the water. When moving or storing it, support the main body and protect the projecting parts rather than carrying it by the beak or a narrow leg.

Is this the right choice for your pond?

Choose this model if you want the appearance of a standing heron with a straightforward peg-mounted installation. Its 76cm height makes it a noticeable pond-side feature without electrical equipment or a water supply. If your main concern is repeated fish losses, start with the pond layout and the protection needed, then decide whether a decoy has a useful supporting role.

For help selecting an appropriate arrangement, contact That Pond Guy with the pond dimensions and a photograph of the surrounding bank. That context is more useful than choosing a deterrent purely by its appearance, and helps identify practical options while keeping feeding and maintenance access straightforward.
