A motion-activated water sprinkler for deterring herons and cats around your pond

The AquaForte Garden Sniper uses a short spray of water to discourage animals from approaching a selected part of the garden. It combines a movement sensor, an adjustable sprinkler head and a ground stake, with water supplied by a connected garden hose. It is a practical option for pond margins where a heron or cat has a regular approach route and you want to respond when movement is detected.

This is the AquaForte Garden Sniper supplied under reference PD1038. The sprinkler is an animal deterrent: its purpose is to make an approach less inviting. It does not physically enclose the pond or guarantee that every visiting animal will be kept away. Plan its position around the area that needs attention, and combine sensible placement with suitable pond protection where a physical barrier is also needed.

What you need to set it up

Have the batteries, a working hose connection and a suitable position ready before assembly. The included components are the sensor housing, spray head, stand, hose connection and end stop. This product does not draw water from your pond: it needs its own hose-fed water supply. Allow a tidy route for the hose so it does not obstruct a path or pull the sprinkler out of position.

Choosing the position around your pond

Start with the route an animal actually uses. For example, a low, open bank beside a shallow margin may need a different position from a raised pond with a narrow access path. Aim the sensor towards the approach and keep its view clear of objects that would hide movement. Then consider where the spray will land. You should be able to cover the intended area without routinely spraying a doorway, seating area or neighbouring property.

The supplier illustration describes protection up to 10 metres. Treat this as an upper-range indication, rather than a promise of identical performance at every installation. Hose pressure, the spray adjustment and the chosen position all affect the useful coverage. A short, well-aimed spray across a relevant approach is usually more useful than setting the widest possible area without checking where the water goes.

Assembly and a dry sensor check

Fit the batteries and assemble the sprinkler following the supplied instructions. Pay particular attention to the rubber seals at the connections. They must sit correctly before the parts are hand tightened; force is not a substitute for a properly seated seal. When placing the stake in the ground, apply pressure to the stand rather than pushing on the sensor housing or sprinkler head.

The matching AquaForte manual describes testing the sensor before connecting the water. Moving a hand in front of the sensor should produce an audible valve click, followed by another click as it closes. This check helps separate an electrical or sensing problem from a water-supply problem. Complete it before final positioning so you can reach the adjustment without leaning across the pond.

Adjusting the sensor and spray separately

Sensor sensitivity determines where movement is detected; the sprinkler adjustments determine where water travels. These are different settings, so check them separately. First limit detection to the part of the garden you intend to protect. Then connect the water and adjust the spray height using the control on the head, and the spray width using the stops below it.

Test the completed installation from a safe position and watch a full activation. Check that the water remains within the chosen area and that the assembly stays upright. Repeat the check after moving the sprinkler or changing the hose arrangement. If the sensor activates but the spray is weak, inspect the water supply and outlet rather than immediately increasing sensitivity.

Routine checks and seasonal care

A deterrent needs occasional checking even when it is left ready to operate. Look for a disturbed stake, a kinked hose, leaking connections or dirt around the spray head. If operation becomes unreliable, the manufacturer directs you to check the batteries, sensor setting, water supply and possible dirt or limescale obstruction. Turn the sensitivity control off before replacing batteries, following the instructions for your unit.

Do not operate the Garden Sniper in freezing conditions. Disconnect the water supply and drain the water-containing parts before frost can damage them. When returning it to service, repeat the sensor and spray checks instead of assuming the previous settings still suit the position.
