Pontec MultiClear 5000 & 8000 Pond Filters
Compact four-stage flow-through filters with an integral UVC
Pontec MultiClear filters are straightforward gravity-return box filters for smaller ornamental and lightly stocked fish ponds. Water is pumped into the UVC at the top of the unit, passes through a sequence of mechanical and biological media, then leaves through the large unrestricted outlet and returns to the pond by gravity.
This page is for the UK filter-only models. A pump and delivery hose are not included. That makes the range useful when you already own a suitable pump, need to replace an older filter, or want to select the pump and pipework separately. If you want all the main hydraulic components in one box, choose a Pontec MultiClear complete set.
Four media stages, each with a different job
The incoming water first passes the integral UVC, which helps control suspended green-water algae. Inside the box, Japanese matting captures larger debris, coarse foam and fine foam progressively polish the water, and high-surface-area biological elements provide a home for beneficial bacteria. Flow-regulating partition walls make the water travel through the media rather than taking an easy route straight to the outlet.

Choosing the pump
Start with the turnover your pond actually needs, then account for the vertical lift from the pond surface to the filter inlet and the resistance of the hose, bends and fittings. The manufacturer’s complete sets pair the 5000 with a 1,500 l/h pump and the 8000 with a 2,500 l/h pump, which are useful reference points for a simple short installation. A long or raised circuit needs a proper pump-curve check.
Do not force excessive flow through the filter. Water needs time and an even path through the media; too much flow can carry dirt through the box or cause the unit to back up. Browse pond filter pumps or contact us with the pond volume, lift and pipe length for help matching the circuit.
Routine care
- Check the pollutant indicator and water level in the box regularly.
- Rinse only the dirtiest media at one service so the biological population is not stripped all at once.
- Use pond water rather than chlorinated tap water for routine biological-media cleaning.
- Replace brittle or permanently collapsed foam with the correct MultiClear foam set.
- Replace the UVC lamp at the interval recommended in the instructions and clean the quartz sleeve carefully.
- Always isolate the pump and UVC before opening or servicing the filter.
Frequently asked questions
Does this include a pump?
No. The 72223 and 72224 UK products are the MultiClear filter and UVC only. Choose the separately listed MultiClear Set if you also need the pump and hose.
Can I bury the filter?
No. It must remain above the return water level because the outlet works by gravity. Conceal it with planting or a ventilated removable screen while keeping the lid, drain and outlet accessible.
Is the maximum pond size suitable for koi?
The quoted fish figure is already lower than the ornamental-pond figure, but a heavily fed koi pond usually needs more capacity again. Contact us before using a compact MultiClear at the upper end of its rating.
