Pond UV Bulbs: Match the Lamp to Your Clarifier

Choose a replacement pond UV bulb by its wattage, lamp form and connection, rather than by watts alone. This listing includes compact PLS and PLL lamps, straight T5 and T8 tubes, and an EA 75W tube option. Select the complete option name that matches your clarifier and its existing lamp before ordering. A 55W PLL lamp and a 55W T8 tube, for example, are different options.

We recommend finding the label on the clarifier and keeping the old lamp reference to hand. If the original is missing, use the equipment manufacturer’s parts list or manual to identify the specified replacement. The wattage on the front of a UV unit is a useful starting point, but it does not establish the lamp’s length, base or pin arrangement.

Compare the lamp forms

Lamp form Options in this listing What to compare
Compact PLS 5W, 7W, 9W, 11W and 13W Exact base, pin arrangement, length and lamp reference
Compact PLL 18W, 24W, 36W and 55W Exact base and length, as well as wattage
Straight T5 tube 4W, 6W, 8W, 11W and 16W Tube length and connections at both ends
Straight T8 tube 15W, 25W, 30W and 55W Tube length, end caps and the specified lamp reference
EA tube option 75W The replacement specified for the exact Evolution Aqua unit

These groups help you navigate the selector. They are not a universal compatibility chart for every clarifier of the same power. Compact lamps can have different bases and pin layouts, and even lamps within one family need their exact reference checked. Do not force a connection or adapt the lamp holder to accommodate a bulb that does not match the specified part.

Understand what the UV system does

The replacement lamp supplies UV-C radiation inside the assembled clarifier. The complete system brings flowing water past the lamp through the arrangement designed by its manufacturer. The lamp, sleeve, housing, ballast and water flow work together. Changing the bulb alone does not alter the flow rating or turn a clarifier into a larger model.

Clearer-looking water is not a measurement of the pond’s ammonia, nitrite or other water-quality readings. Continue the pond’s normal testing and filter maintenance independently of lamp replacement. Avoid treating a new lamp as a remedy for every water problem: first establish whether the issue concerns the UV system, circulation, accumulated debris or another part of the pond.

Plan replacement around the equipment instructions

Follow the clarifier manufacturer’s lamp-replacement interval and any specified operating hours. Visible light from an old lamp is not enough to prove that it still provides the UV-C performance required by the unit. Equally, a single poor water-clarity result does not prove that the bulb is the only part that needs attention.

Record the fitting date, complete lamp option and equipment model when you replace it. That makes the next service easier and helps distinguish a recently fitted lamp from one that has operated through several seasons. Keep the manual and spare-part reference with the record, particularly if there are two UV systems or several similar lamps in use.

Check the sleeve, seals and connections

When servicing the unit, inspect the other components covered by its maintenance instructions. A lamp is separate from its quartz sleeve, seals and control gear. Do not assume those parts are supplied with the selected bulb. A damaged sleeve or displaced seal needs attention according to the unit’s instructions before the equipment is returned to use.

Check that the old lamp was seated correctly and that its contacts and holder are in sound condition. Do not work around damaged wiring, signs of water entering electrical areas or a faulty connection by repeatedly fitting another bulb. Stop using damaged equipment and have the fault assessed before carrying out the planned replacement.

Fit the replacement carefully

Isolate the equipment from its electricity supply and follow the manufacturer’s procedure for stopping water flow and opening the housing. Allow the lamp to cool before handling it. Protect the glass and compare the new and old references before installation. Use the prescribed seals and assembly sequence, taking care not to trap a seal or strain a lamp holder.

Keep the lamp enclosed by the correctly assembled housing. UV-C must not be viewed as an exposed light source: it can injure eyes and skin. Use only the unit’s intended indicator or inspection method when checking operation. Re-establish flow, inspect for leaks and reconnect the electrical supply in the order set out in the equipment manual.

Choose a model-specific alternative where needed

If the parts list specifies a dedicated lamp, compare the relevant range before choosing a general wattage option. We also list Oase replacement UV bulbs, Evolution Aqua replacement UV bulbs and TMC replacement UV bulbs. Check the model information on the selected page rather than assuming another brand’s lamp is interchangeable.

For other equipment, compare our Yamitsu Algae Master replacement UV bulbs and Burtons replacement UV bulbs. Keep the full lamp and equipment references together; an apparently similar tube is not sufficient evidence of fitment.

Handling and disposal

Store an unused bulb in its protective packaging until fitting, away from impacts and heavy equipment. Treat a removed lamp carefully even if it no longer works. Check local facilities for the appropriate lamp-recycling route and follow the lamp manufacturer’s instructions if the glass is broken. Do not put a damaged lamp back into a clarifier or rely on its packaging to make it safe to handle.
