NT Labs Pond Mature Live Filter Bacteria

Liquid bacterial support for new filters, spring starts and pond maintenance

NT Labs Pond Mature, labelled Live Filter Bacteria in the current Pond range, supplies beneficial bacteria to support biological filtration. It is available in 250ml, 500ml and 1 litre bottles. Choose the size from the volume of water you need to treat and whether you are applying the standard dose or the manufacturer’s double dose for a new pond, new filter or the start of the season.

NT Labs describes a blend of seven beneficial bacterial species, including Nitrosomonas, Nitrobacter and Nitrospira. These organisms support the biological processes that deal with fish waste. Mature is intended for situations such as filter establishment, adding fish, restarting after winter, recovering after medicinal treatment and maintenance that disturbs an established filter.

Compare bottle sizes and treatment volumes

The standard manufacturer dose is 10ml per 182 litres, equivalent to 40 imperial gallons. The following capacities are calculated from that rate and refer to one standard application. A double-dose application treats half the water volume from the same bottle.

  • 250ml: treats 4,550 litres at the standard dose, or 2,275 litres at double dose.
  • 500ml: treats 9,100 litres at the standard dose, or 4,550 litres at double dose.
  • 1 litre: treats 18,200 litres at the standard dose, or 9,100 litres at double dose.

Those figures are total treatment capacities, not a recommendation to empty a whole bottle into a smaller pond. Measure the quantity needed for your system and retain the remaining product in its original container. If you plan repeated applications, calculate the amount needed for the intended course rather than selecting a bottle from the pond size alone.

Calculating your dose

For a standard application, divide the actual water volume in litres by 182 and multiply by 10 to obtain millilitres of product. For example, a system containing 1,820 litres requires 100ml at the standard rate, or 200ml when the manufacturer’s double-dose instruction applies. This worked example is calculated from the published rate; always check the instructions on the bottle supplied.

Use the water volume, allowing for the space displaced by substantial rocks, gravel and other features. Include water held in the operating filter and pipework when working out the whole circulating system. A pond’s maximum advertised capacity, its outside dimensions or the pump’s flow rating will not necessarily give you its actual volume of water.

How to apply Pond Mature

Shake the bottle well before measuring the dose. NT Labs recommends adding the required quantity directly to the filter where a filter is fitted, and specifies double dosing at the start of the season or when establishing a new pond or filter. Its guidance also allows weekly use, with water testing used to monitor ammonia and nitrite.

Keep your dose calculation and application dates together with your water-test records. That makes it easier to distinguish a planned maintenance application from a response to a changing test result. Check the product label before use and retain it with the bottle, so another person caring for the pond can see what has been added and when.

Support the filter as it establishes

A newly filled pond and a mature biological filter are different things. Clear water alone does not demonstrate that the system can process its fish load. Introduce livestock gradually and check ammonia and nitrite as the filter develops, particularly when feeding or stocking increases. A bacterial supplement should be part of that process rather than a reason to skip the checks.

Keep suitable filtration and circulation operating, and maintain the media according to the equipment manufacturer’s instructions. When cleaning established reusable foam, use removed pond water and avoid unnecessarily replacing or cleaning all of the media at once. Keeping some established media in service helps preserve biological activity while the rest of the filter is maintained.

Mature and Filter Bugs: choose the intended range

NT Labs offers Pond Mature Live Filter Bacteria in its Pond range and NT Labs Filter Bugs in its Koi Care range. They are separate products with their own directions. If you are replacing a previous purchase, match the name on the bottle and use the instructions for the product you have selected rather than transferring a dose from another bacterial supplement.

Preparing replacement tap water is a separate job. See NT Labs Tap Water Chlorine Remover for the corresponding Pond-range water conditioner. Mature supports biological filtration; it should not be used as a substitute for the appropriate treatment of chlorinated replacement water.

Responding to a water-quality change

If ammonia or nitrite is detected, investigate the cause as well as supporting the filter. Check circulation, recent feeding, new fish, filter cleaning and any interruption to the system. Repeat tests to follow the trend and take appropriate water-quality action rather than assuming that one application has resolved the problem. Observe the fish alongside the readings, and seek advice promptly if their behaviour or condition gives cause for concern.
