NT Labs Algae Stopperz Barley Straw Pellets

A measured barley straw treatment for pond algae control

NT Labs Algae Stopperz provides barley straw in a sinking pellet form for use in ornamental ponds. The treatment is intended to help control green algae and blanketweed as part of an ongoing pond-care routine. NT Labs describes it as a natural, pesticide-free product. Unlike a liquid treatment, the pellets can be distributed around the pond margins or placed in a pond planting basket, allowing you to choose the arrangement that suits your installation.

Choose a 1kg pack or a 20kg bulk pack of Algae Stopperz, also named Pond Barley Straw Pellets. Each selection supplies one pack in the chosen weight. The bulk pack suits a planned programme of repeat applications or larger installations; it is not a direction to put the whole contents into a pond at once. It is not a bottle of liquid barley straw or a loose straw bio bag. These products have different application directions, so use the instructions for the pellets supplied rather than transferring a dose from another barley-based treatment.

What to expect after application

NT Labs advises that the pellets sink and begin working in around two weeks. Allow for that preparation period when planning algae control. Algae Stopperz is therefore better considered as part of a continuing maintenance programme than as a way to achieve an immediate change in the pond’s appearance. Record the application date so you can judge progress against the expected timescale.

Blanketweed forms strands and masses that can be removed by hand, whereas green water presents differently. Check what is happening in the pond before choosing a treatment. The manufacturer specifically describes summer removal of existing blanketweed followed by Algae Stopperz to help prevent regrowth. Removing accessible weed also makes it easier to see new growth and assess the maintenance programme.

Published dosage

The NT Labs dosing guide states 100g per 900 litres, approximately 200 imperial gallons. Use the actual water volume of the pond and measure the pellets by weight. A partly filled pond, shelves and other displacement can make the operating volume different from a simple calculation based on the outside dimensions.

Water volume Pellets at the published rate
900 litres 100g
1,800 litres 200g
4,500 litres 500g
9,000 litres 1,000g

These examples are calculated from the manufacturer’s published rate. Read the current pack before dosing and follow its directions. Do not assume that a whole pack is required simply because it has been opened, and do not substitute a volume measure for a weight measurement unless the current label provides that conversion.

How to place the pellets

Sprinkle the measured pellets around the edge of the pond margins, following the manufacturer’s instructions. They sink after application. Alternatively, NT Labs permits placement in a pond planting basket. A basket can be a useful way to keep the pellets in a defined position, especially where you want to know exactly where the treatment has been placed.

Choose a position that remains accessible for routine pond care and allows you to inspect the installation. Keep equipment intakes clear and consider where leaves and other debris normally collect. Preparing the measured quantity and deciding on its location before beginning makes it easier to apply a consistent dose and maintain a useful treatment record.

Repeat applications and seasonal planning

NT Labs recommends repeating the application every two months until control is effective. Once that point is reached, its guidance is to add one third of the dose each month. These are two different stages of the programme: the maintenance quantity is not an instruction to add a full dose every month. Work from the dose calculated for your own pond.

The manufacturer also recommends continuing use through autumn and winter so activity is established for the beginning of spring. That seasonal approach is useful when algae returns predictably as light levels and growing conditions change. Make application dates part of your pond-maintenance notes alongside cleaning and water checks, so the programme is not dependent on remembering when the previous dose was added.

Aeration and wider pond care

Keep the pond well oxygenated throughout use, as NT Labs directs. Check that the air supply or other aeration arrangement is working properly before application and during the treatment programme. The fact that this is a barley straw product does not remove the need to maintain suitable conditions for the fish and the pond’s biological filtration.

Continue normal observation and water testing. Changes in fish behaviour need investigation in their own right, rather than being attributed automatically to visible algae. The NT Labs Pond Lab Multi-Test Kit checks six water parameters and can help you keep a record of the pond’s condition during routine maintenance.

Other barley straw formats

If a contained straw format better suits your setup, compare NT Labs Barley Straw Bio Bags. For the liquid option, see NT Labs Barleyclear Liquid Barley Straw. Compare the application method and the current instructions for each product when choosing; their doses are not interchangeable.
