Evolution Aqua Blanketweed Natural Pond Treatment

A powdered treatment for blanketweed in ornamental freshwater ponds

Evolution Aqua Blanketweed, labelled The Natural Solution, is a pond treatment supplied in 400g, 800g, 2kg and 4kg packs. It is designed for ornamental ponds and other closed bodies of freshwater. Choose the pack for your measured pond volume and follow the directions for this formula. Evolution Aqua also makes Stop Blanketweed, which has a different dosing routine and different pack sizes.

Evolution Aqua describes this natural formula as safe for fish, plants, wildlife and beneficial filter bacteria when used as directed. It is particularly useful when you want to treat blanketweed while continuing normal circulation and UV operation. The powder temporarily makes the water cloudy, so plan the treatment around that expected change rather than expecting instant clear water.

Choose the right pack

Pack Manufacturer stated coverage
400g Up to 5,000 litres
800g Up to 10,000 litres
2kg Up to 25,000 litres
4kg Up to 50,000 litres

Measure your pond before dosing

For a rectangular pond, multiply length by width by water depth in metres, then multiply by 1,000 to calculate litres. For example, 3m by 2m with a water depth of 1m holds approximately 6,000 litres. Use the actual water depth rather than the total height of the pond wall. Shelves, sloping sides and irregular shapes mean a simple rectangle calculation may overestimate the volume.

Keep a record of the volume you use for pond treatments. It makes repeat applications easier to measure consistently. If you have a reliable water meter reading from filling the pond, retain it with your maintenance notes. Our guide to maintaining pond water conditions explains the wider maintenance routine. A guess based on the apparent surface area can be misleading, particularly where a pond has a deep central section.

Mixing and applying the powder

The stated dose is one supplied scoop for every 400 litres. Mix the required quantity with pond water in a watering can, stir and distribute it evenly across the surface. Repeat after 14 days if required. Use the supplied scoop and the directions on your pack; do not substitute dosing instructions from Stop Blanketweed or another brand.

Remove accessible weed before treatment

Evolution Aqua recommends removing as much blanketweed as possible before dosing. This gives you a useful opportunity to clear weed that is gathering around accessible pond edges or obstructing equipment. Work carefully around plants, fish and the pond liner, and remove collected material from the water rather than simply breaking it into smaller pieces.

After treatment, the manufacturer’s guidance is to wait five days before removing as much excess weed as possible. Build that follow-up into your maintenance plan. Check accessible pump strainers and filtration regularly while material is coming away, following the equipment instructions when cleaning them. Treatment and physical removal work together; a pond still needs its usual maintenance during the process.

Keep circulation and aeration running

The manufacturer says this formula performs best where water is moving, whether that movement comes from a pond pump, filter, fountain or waterfall. Strong surface movement or aeration from an air pump and air stone is recommended. Before dosing, check that the equipment you rely on is operating normally and that the water is circulating through the intended areas of the pond.

You do not need to switch off the UV clarifier for this treatment. That is the guidance for Evolution Aqua’s natural Blanketweed formula; it should not be assumed to apply to every pond treatment or fish medication. Follow the instructions for the product actually being used and keep the circulation arrangements appropriate to your pond.

What to expect after adding it

White or cloudy water is an expected effect of adding the powder. Evolution Aqua advises that this can last for up to five days before the water clears. Allow for that period when planning maintenance or viewing your fish. Cloudiness alone is not a reason to add another dose early or to combine several different treatments.

Record the application date and the amount used. This lets you distinguish the initial cloudiness period, the five-day weed removal step and the 14-day repeat interval. Continue observing the fish and maintaining the pond while the treatment is working.

Temperature and other pond treatments

Evolution Aqua states that effectiveness is reduced below 8°C and improves as temperatures rise. Check the pond water temperature rather than relying on the weather forecast. A brief warm spell does not necessarily mean a large pond has warmed to the same temperature as the air.

If fish medication becomes necessary, the manufacturer’s general advice is to leave seven days between treatments and consider a partial water change where a medication could react with the earlier product. This is not a guarantee that every combination is compatible. Check the exact medication instructions and seek appropriate advice for the fish concerned. Interrupting the Blanketweed dosing routine can also affect its performance.
