Norfine 90cm Heavy Duty Koi Net Head

A reinforced aluminium pan head with standard 6mm hexagonal mesh

The Norfine 90cm Heavy Duty Koi Net Head provides a broad pan-style opening on a frame made from half-inch diameter aluminium tubing. Norfine describes this construction as a step up in strength from its smaller heads. The netting remains the standard 6mm hex-mesh, so the heavy-duty designation refers to the frame construction rather than a change to a coarse-mesh net.

This is the separately supplied NH590 net head, with a click-fitting connection for a compatible handle. It can be used when replacing a head on an existing suitable pole or when choosing the head and handle individually. A handle, koi sock and inspection bowl are separate items to plan around your pond and the fish you need to handle.

The manufacturer uses 90cm and 36-inch naming for this head. These are nominal size descriptions rather than exact installation tolerances. The half-inch measurement refers to the diameter of the frame tubing. It does not specify its wall thickness, the handle socket diameter or a maximum load the net can carry.

Choosing the head size

The 90cm model sits between the standard Norfine 74cm head and the 100cm heavy-duty head. It gives you a substantial opening while taking up less space across the pond than the one-metre version. Compare those dimensions with your access and fish-handling requirements before choosing.

Measure any restricted opening beneath a cover and consider the room needed to turn the rim around shelves, pipework and pond edges. A head that fits through an opening may still be awkward to manoeuvre once inside it. Plan where you will guide the fish and where the transfer equipment will be positioned, rather than relying on the pond’s overall size alone.

Frame strength and mesh choice

The heavy-duty aluminium tube is the defining construction detail of this version. It supports the broad pan shape, while the netting provides the containment surface. Check both parts when assessing an older net: sound mesh cannot compensate for a damaged frame, and an intact frame does not make torn netting suitable for handling fish.

Norfine separately lists a 90cm Fast Flow head with 20mm mesh. This NH590 listing is the standard 6mm-mesh heavy-duty model, so do not use the Fast Flow specification when comparing it with other nets. Mesh size matters independently of head diameter, especially where very small fish are involved. A koi pan net should not be assumed to retain tiny fry.

Handle fitting and working reach

Norfine specifies a click-fitting head for use with its compatible handles. Check the actual socket and retaining arrangement of the pole you intend to use. A handle supplied with another pond tool may use a different connection, and a threaded fitting should not be treated as interchangeable with a click fitting.

Our AquaForte aluminium click-fit net handles give you separate lengths to consider, subject to confirming the connection. Choose enough reach to work from a stable position without stretching over the pond. A broad head on a long pole takes space to control, so consider the working distance and the surrounding obstacles together.

Assemble the equipment before starting and confirm that the locking mechanism engages. Inspect the head connection for wear or excessive movement. On an extendable pole, check the length-adjustment lock separately. Remove debris from the fitting so that grit or trapped material does not interfere with engagement.

Guiding and transferring koi

Use the pan to bring the fish into a manageable position while it stays supported in the water. Prepare a suitable bowl or transfer sock first, move calmly and avoid repeated chasing. Keep track of the rim as well as the fish, particularly when working close to a wall or changing direction.

A correctly selected Norfine koi sock net can be used for the transfer stage according to its instructions. The heavy-duty pan frame does not establish a fish-weight lifting rating. Avoid using the head as a suspended carrying basket and reassess the approach if the fish becomes distressed.

Maintenance and replacement netting

Rinse debris from the mesh after use and inspect the rim, net attachment and click fitting before storing the head. Let it dry and keep the broad frame clear of heavy objects or sharp tools. Use suitable equipment hygiene when working between separate ponds or quarantine systems.

Norfine offers replacement 36-inch/90cm pan netting in 6mm hex-mesh for threading onto an existing frame. Check that the replacement matches your head and inspect the frame before fitting it. Replacing worn mesh may be appropriate when the rest of the head remains sound; a damaged connector or distorted frame needs separate attention.
