Lotus Instant Preformed Ponds for Small Gardens and Wildlife
A small pond can bring movement, planting and wildlife into a garden without the layout work involved in a flexible liner. The Lotus Instant range gives you a ready-made black pond shell with a fixed shape and planting shelves. Choose the Chub, Tench, Perch, Roach or Bream to suit the space you have measured. These are compact garden ponds, with nominal capacities from 62 to 273 litres, made from high-density polyethylene by Pond Products UK, the British manufacturer formerly known as Lotus Atlantis.
We recommend choosing these small shells primarily for planted water features and wildlife projects. Their modest depth and water volume should not be confused with a purpose-built koi pond. Plants, visiting insects and the changing reflections on the water can make a small pond interesting without adding fish. If you want to keep fish, plan the species, adult size, filtration and seasonal care before choosing a shell.

The dimensions describe each shell’s outer footprint and deepest point. They do not describe a rectangular tank: the shaped outline and shelves reduce the internal volume. Actual working water volume also depends on the waterline, planting baskets, stones and any equipment. Measure the amount of water used when filling rather than calculating treatment doses from the outer dimensions.
The Perch offers 150 litres within a longer, narrower footprint: its maximum length is 137cm, width 76cm and depth 36cm. Compare those actual dimensions with the site rather than assuming that a larger nominal volume always means a wider pond. Its shaped planting areas are part of the moulded shell, so allow room for marginal baskets as well as open water.
Choosing the right position
Start by marking the overall footprint on the ground and checking the route from your delivery point to the proposed pond. Allow additional room for installation, edging and maintenance access. A site that is easy to see from the house or seating area often gets more attention and care than a hidden corner. Think about nearby roots, falling leaves and how you will keep garden runoff away from the pond.
Avoid placing the pond where fertilisers, pesticides or water from a treated patio can wash into it. Plan safe access around the water and take appropriate precautions wherever children or pets use the garden. For a wildlife pond, include a stable, gently sloping route between the water and the surrounding ground. Planting shelves are useful, but they do not automatically provide an escape route for every animal.
Supporting a preformed pond correctly
The rigid shape makes setting out straightforward, but it still needs careful support. Plan an in-ground installation with the underside and shelves supported, rather than leaving the filled shell resting on its rim or bridging gaps. Use the actual pond as your guide when shaping the excavation. Check the manufacturer’s supplied installation instructions before starting and remove sharp stones, roots and other objects that could press against the shell.
Set the rim level in more than one direction before completing the surround. Fill and backfill in controlled stages so that the shell remains supported as the load increases. Avoid forcing the pond into an excavation that is too small or distorting it with compacted material. A level rim gives an even waterline and makes it easier to keep soil and loose edging out of the water. Do not assume that this plastic shell is designed to stand unsupported above ground.
Planting and setting up your pond
The moulded shelves offer positions for suitable marginal plants. Match each plant’s recommended planting depth to the water above the basket, not simply the depth of the shelf below ground level. Keep some open water and leave room for plants to develop. For ideas, compare our Native Wildlife Marginal Pond Pack, checking the individual plant sizes against your chosen shell.
Basket liners can help retain suitable aquatic planting medium while allowing water to pass through. Our Kockney Koi Hessian Pond Plant Basket Liners provide a choice of sizes for lining compatible baskets. Avoid ordinary fertilised garden compost unless the planting instructions specifically allow it, and keep loose material from spilling into the pond.
If you fill with mains water, use a suitable conditioner according to its label and the measured water volume. Blagdon Wildlife Pond Tap Safe is an option to review for this stage. Water conditioning is separate from establishing a biological filter: adding conditioner does not make a new fish pond instantly mature.
Adding movement or filtration
A small fountain or gentle circulation can be attractive, but select equipment for the actual working volume and lift required. An oversized fountain can throw water outside a compact shell, especially in wind. Keep pump access practical and protect wildlife around any intake. A fish pond needs an appropriately designed filtration and aeration system; a shell alone is not a complete fishkeeping kit.
Maintenance and alternative sizes
Remove excessive fallen leaves, inspect the edging and maintain a stable water level. Small volumes can change temperature quickly, so observe conditions through hot weather and winter rather than treating a compact pond as a maintenance-free ornament. Check any pump or filter regularly, using its own cleaning instructions.
If you need a larger volume or a different outline, compare the Oase PE Preformed Garden Ponds. This listing supplies one selected Lotus Instant pond shell. Plants, baskets, pumps, filters, edging and installation materials are separate purchases. Choose the model from the selector and check the dimensions before ordering.
