Choose a square fish net, triangular skimmer or koi pan head for your Blagdon handle

Blagdon’s separate pond net heads let you choose the shape of tool you need without buying another complete net and handle every time. This range includes the 35cm square net head, 40cm triangular skimmer net head and 45cm koi pan net head. Each is sold as a head only, so you will need a suitable handle to complete the net.

The three shapes offer different ways to work around your pond. Start with the job you need to do, then check the head size, your available working space and the handle you intend to use. A net that is comfortable to manoeuvre from a secure position is more useful than a larger head that is awkward around planting or difficult to reach with.

Compare the three net heads

• 35cm square net head: Blagdon part 1005685. A square head for fish catching and appropriate general pond maintenance.
• 40cm triangular skimmer net head: Blagdon part 1005692. A triangular head for skimming and targeted cleaning tasks.
• 45cm koi pan net head: Blagdon part 1005715. A round pan-style head for guiding and positioning suitably sized fish during handling.

These measurements are Blagdon’s stated head sizes. They do not describe handle length or the overall reach of an assembled net. The photographs show the different head shapes so you can compare them before choosing an option. The handle is not included with any of these three options.

35cm square net head

The square head provides a straightforward shape for routine netting. Consider the width of gaps between marginal plants, baskets and other equipment when deciding whether it will move freely through your pond. Check that any fish you need to catch fits comfortably within the head, with room to guide it calmly rather than forcing it into a confined space.

For general maintenance, collect manageable amounts of debris at a time. A heavily loaded net is harder to move and puts more strain on the head, connection and handle. Avoid using a fish net to lever rocks or pull out heavy, rooted plants. Those jobs need a different tool and a planned approach.

40cm triangular skimmer net head

The triangular skimmer gives you another head shape for working around the pond surface. It can be a useful option when collecting floating debris in particular areas, especially when you can approach it from a clear stretch of pond edge. Work gradually rather than making fast, forceful sweeps that disturb the water or surrounding plants.

Choose the cleaning tool according to the material you want to remove. Skimming visible debris is different from filtering fine suspended particles or removing a deep layer of sediment. 45cm koi pan net head

A pan-style net is useful for guiding a fish towards a position where it can be transferred with suitable handling equipment. The 45cm head needs to be assessed against the size of the fish you keep. The word koi in the product name does not mean this size will suit every koi; larger fish may need a larger head and a different handling arrangement.

Prepare the receiving bowl or other equipment before netting begins. Keep movements slow and avoid repeatedly chasing fish. Do not use the head size alone as a lifting-capacity guide, and do not assume the net is suitable for carrying a heavy fish through the air. Use an appropriate transfer method for the fish and task.

Choosing and checking the handle

Blagdon presents its 120cm net handle, 180cm fibre glass net handle and 230cm telescopic net handle alongside these heads. Check the exact handle and attachment before ordering, particularly if you are reusing an older pole or one from another brand. A similar-looking fitting is not enough to establish that two parts will connect securely.

Before use, assemble the head and handle securely and check that the head stays in position. Blagdon describes metal fixings that help prevent the net head twisting. Inspect the connection periodically and stop using the net if the head becomes loose or the handle is damaged. Choose a handle length that allows you to work without leaning dangerously over the water.
