Burtons Pond Top-Up Box with Lid and Overflow
A neat mechanical top-up chamber for stable pond water level
The Burtons Pond Top-Up Box provides a dedicated chamber for a mechanical inlet valve, keeping the working parts away from fish and making routine inspection easier. It is intended for koi ponds, formal ponds and filtration systems where the pond level needs to remain within a consistent operating range.
The box has a 1/2-inch mains-water inlet, a 50mm pond connection and a separate 50mm overflow. A removable lid keeps the valve area tidy while the moulded fixing points make the chamber easier to secure during installation.
Our practical advice: set the overflow as a genuine emergency route, not as the normal way of controlling the level. Its discharge must remain visible and must not create flooding beside the pond or building.
Connections and dimensions that matter
- 1/2-inch mains-water inlet
- 50mm outlet to the pond or system
- 50mm emergency overflow
- Overflow centre approximately 160mm below the top of the box
- Supplied with lid and moulded fixing points
- Overflow height can be adjusted with a suitable 1.5-inch rubber socket arrangement
Burtons recommends rubber fittings on the 50mm outlet and overflow. These make final alignment easier and provide a serviceable joint. Support all pipework so that its weight is not carried by the moulded connections.
Safe top-up water for fish
The box controls level but does not treat mains water. Chlorine and chloramine can harm fish and biological filtration, so install a suitable water purifier or dechlorinator upstream. A mechanical valve can run unnoticed, so check cartridge life by volume and verify the treated water rather than relying on appearance.
Installation considerations
Mount the chamber level and accessible, then set the float valve at the pond operating level. Allow for the drawdown created when pumps and skimmers are running. Test the inlet shut-off, the pond connection and the overflow before completing landscaping around the box.
Frequently asked questions
Is the float valve included?
Check the current product photographs and supplied-parts list before installation; the box is designed as a protected top-up chamber and the exact valve arrangement should be confirmed at order.
Does the box dechlorinate the water?
No. Use a correctly maintained pond dechlorinator on the incoming mains-water supply.
What pipe size connects to the pond?
The outlet and overflow are both 50mm connections.
Can the overflow height be adjusted?
Yes. Burtons describes adjustment using a suitable 1.5-inch rubber socket arrangement.
Where should the overflow discharge?
Route it to a safe, visible location with enough capacity to prevent flooding if the inlet valve fails.
Why use a separate box instead of a float valve in the pond?
It protects the valve from fish, gives a tidier finish and makes inspection and adjustment easier.
Compare top-up methods and treat the incoming water
For electronic high- and low-level sensing rather than a mechanical float valve, compare the Burtons Automatic Pond Water Top-Up System. The better choice depends on the available installation space, preferred control method and how the overflow will be routed.
Whichever system you choose, mains top-up water should pass through a suitable 10-inch or 20-inch pond dechlorinator at the stated flow rate before it reaches fish.
