How Filter Start supports biological filtration

The Filter Start range contains bacteria involved in the successive stages of nitrification. Ammonia-oxidising bacteria carry out the first stage, followed by nitrite-oxidising bacteria that convert nitrite to nitrate. Checking both ammonia and nitrite therefore gives a more useful picture of filter performance than checking only one.

This biological process requires oxygen and alkalinity. A bacterial additive cannot make up for unsuitable water conditions or inadequate aeration. Nitrate can accumulate even where nitrification is working, so continue the normal water management appropriate to your pond. Clear water alone does not establish that the biological filter is coping with the fish load.

Starting a new filter

A new pond or replacement biological filter needs careful observation as its bacterial community establishes. Filter Start is intended to support that process. Before applying it, check that the filter is assembled correctly, its biological media are in place and the circulation and aeration arrangements meet the equipment manufacturer’s instructions.

Keep a record of the starting water readings, the date of application and any changes to feeding or fish numbers. Continue testing as the system develops.
