Why choose the gel formulation?

The gel is designed for applying bacteria directly to accessible filter media rather than choosing a liquid formulation. This can be useful when the filter is open during commissioning or planned maintenance. Choose the format around your maintenance arrangement. Filter Start liquid and Filter Start Gel are separate products, even though both belong to the same bacterial-starting range. What happens in biological filtration?

The manufacturer identifies ammonia-oxidising and nitrite-oxidising bacteria in the Filter Start range. These perform successive stages of nitrification: ammonia is converted to nitrite, then nitrite to nitrate. Both stages matter when checking whether the filter can cope with the waste produced by your fish.

UF/IFAS explains that this process needs oxygen and alkalinity. Adding a starter cannot compensate for inadequate aeration or unsuitable water conditions. Nitrate can also accumulate, so biological conversion does not remove the need to manage the wider water balance and routine pond maintenance.

Choosing a pack and planning the application

Check progress with water tests

Record readings before application and continue checking while the filter establishes or recovers. Include the date, maintenance carried out and any changes to feeding or fish numbers. That record helps distinguish a developing trend from a single reading and gives useful context if further advice is needed.

After filter maintenance

Before applying the gel, identify the biological media and complete the maintenance appropriate to your particular filter. Reassemble the equipment correctly and follow the product and filter instructions when restoring operation. Do not assume that every chamber, screen or mechanical cleaning stage has the same role as the biological media.

Continue observing the fish and water readings afterwards. The amount of starter added is not evidence that the filter has fully matured, so avoid treating application as an immediate reason to increase stocking. If the system is struggling, assess the underlying maintenance, feeding and filtration conditions as well as the bacterial support.

Storage, other treatments and further advice

This product contains living bacteria. Check the expiry date and follow the storage conditions on the supplied pack. Use clean measuring equipment and keep the product in its labelled container, so the application and storage guidance remain available until it has been used.

Check the instructions before combining the gel with medication or deciding whether UV or other equipment needs a temporary change.
