Pressurised bead filtration for koi ponds and high demand pond systems

The AquaForte EconoBead 60 (8400galls) is a pressurised bead filter for koi ponds, ornamental ponds and filtration upgrades where compact mechanical and biological filtration is needed. EconoBead filters use floating bead media inside a closed vessel. As pond water passes through, fine dirt is trapped between the beads and beneficial bacteria colonise the media surface.

This makes a bead filter different from a simple pressure filter or sponge box. It is aimed at pond keepers who need stronger filtration, often on koi ponds or heavily stocked ponds, but do not have space for a large multibay filter. Because the vessel is pressurised, cleaned water can usually be returned through pipework, raised returns or waterfalls more flexibly than with a gravity return box filter.

How EconoBead filtration works

The bead media performs two jobs. Mechanically, it traps suspended solids and fine waste so the water becomes clearer. Biologically, it provides surface area for nitrifying bacteria, which convert ammonia from fish waste into nitrite and then nitrate. Good bead filter performance still depends on oxygen, stable water chemistry and regular cleaning, but the compact design gives a lot of filtration potential in a small footprint.

A bead filter should ideally be protected by suitable pre-filtration. A sieve, drum filter or other mechanical pre-filter reduces the amount of heavy waste entering the bead vessel. This keeps cleaning easier and helps the bead media work more effectively. A UV clarifier is also normally recommended to deal with green water algae, as bead filters are not UV systems by themselves.

Cleaning and maintenance

EconoBead filters are cleaned using the multiport valve and backwash process. This allows trapped waste to be flushed out of the filter instead of being broken down inside the pond system. Cleaning frequency depends on stocking level, feeding, season, pre-filtration and pond debris. During heavy feeding periods, koi ponds usually need more frequent cleaning than lightly stocked ornamental ponds.

The key is not to wait until flow is severely reduced. Regular cleaning keeps the bead pack open, reduces trapped organic waste and helps the filter stay predictable. Like all biological filters, a bead filter also needs time to mature, so it should not be expected to carry a heavy fish load instantly from new.

Choosing this system against other filters

Choose an EconoBead when you want compact, pressurised filtration with strong polishing ability. It is particularly useful where the filter has to sit away from the pond, where the return route is awkward or where a tidy filter bay is important. A drum filter may be easier on very high end koi systems, while a simple pressure filter may be enough for a small ornamental pond. EconoBead sits between those options as a strong, compact filtration upgrade.

Advice from That Pond Guy

A bead filter is only as good as the way it is installed. Pump choice, bypass design, waste pipework, UV sizing and pre-filtration all affect performance. That Pond Guy can help customers think about the whole filtration layout rather than treating the bead filter as a standalone product. That makes the advice more useful for serious pond keepers and helps avoid undersized or awkward installations.

UV sizing and maintenance notes

AquaForte EconoBead 60 (8400galls) should be matched to the pond volume, flow rate and water clarity problem you are trying to solve. UV clarification works best when water passes the lamp at a suitable speed and the quartz sleeve is kept clean. If the flow is too fast, contact time can be reduced. If the lamp is old or the quartz sleeve is dirty, performance can drop even when the unit still appears to be switched on.

  • Replace UV lamps as part of routine seasonal maintenance.
  • Clean or inspect the quartz sleeve when water clarity starts to deteriorate.
  • Match the UV to the pump and filter rather than installing it in isolation.
  • Allow safe access for lamp changes and winter maintenance.

Good UV performance also depends on mechanical filtration. Removing fine debris before the UV helps the lamp work on green water algae more effectively.

Complete your AquaForte setup

A bead filter works best when it is treated as part of a complete filtration system. The pump, pre-filter, UV clarifier, pipe size, bypass and cleaning access all affect performance and maintenance.

Extra installation guidance

Before ordering, think about the product as part of the wider pond rather than as a standalone item. The right choice depends on pond volume, fish load, available space, maintenance access and how the pond is actually used. A product that is technically powerful can still underperform if it is paired with undersized hose, poor flow, restricted pipework or an unsuitable filter. Taking time to plan the complete system usually gives clearer water, easier maintenance and lower long term running costs.
