Pontec PondoSolar Solar Fountain Pump Sets
Cable-free solar fountain kits for ponds without a nearby mains supply
Pontec PondoSolar sets combine a low-voltage fountain pump, solar panel and nozzle options for garden ponds where running a mains cable is undesirable. The range spans a gentle 150 l/h bubbling display through to the much stronger 1,600 l/h model.
The word Control is important: the 250 Control and 600 Control include rechargeable energy storage for more stable operation and timed use after charging. The 150 and 1600 are direct-solar systems, so their output responds more immediately to available sunlight and will reduce or stop as conditions change.

| PondoSolar 1600 | 1,600 L/h | Solar panel, no battery | 20W panel |
Choosing the right size
Choose the effect first, then decide whether battery-supported operation matters. Direct-solar models are simple and economical but intentionally weather dependent. Control models are better where a steadier timed display is expected, although their battery still requires adequate daylight and is not an unlimited overnight power source.
Start by deciding what the display or circulation point must achieve. A small bubbling ornament needs much less water than a raised blade, a broad cascade or a tall fountain jet. Measure the vertical difference from the water surface to the highest outlet, then allow for friction. Narrow hose, long runs, sharp elbows, restrictive valves and undersized fittings all reduce the delivered flow.
If the result is critical, use the manufacturer’s performance curve rather than choosing only from the product name. It is usually better to keep the pipe bore generous and control a small amount of surplus flow than to make a marginal pump work at the edge of its capability. Do not use a valve on the inlet side and never allow the pump to run without water.
Installation details that make a real difference
- Face the panel towards unobstructed daylight and avoid shade from fences or planting.
- Use the supplied cable route without tight bends, trapping or trip hazards.
- Keep the pump submerged and the intake clear as water levels fall in hot weather.
- Store and maintain the battery model in accordance with the instructions during long periods out of use.
Keep the pump accessible. Even a reliable water-feature pump needs its intake inspected and cleaned, particularly in shallow features where leaves, blanketweed and mineral deposits collect quickly. Isolate the electricity before touching the pump, cable or nozzle assembly, and use an outdoor supply with appropriate RCD protection.
How this range compares
Solar fountain pumps prioritise simple installation and low running cost, not the constant output of a mains pump. Choose a mains-powered PondoVario or Aquarius Fountain Set where a consistent display is essential in all daylight and weather conditions.

Frequently asked questions
Does maximum flow mean the amount I will receive?
No. It is a laboratory figure at minimal head. The installed flow falls as lift and pipe resistance increase.
Can I reduce the flow?
A valve may be fitted on the outlet where the instructions permit it. Never throttle the inlet. If regular adjustment is important, compare a purpose-designed controllable pump.
Can the pump stay outdoors in winter?
Follow the model instructions and prevent freezing. A pump left in service must remain sufficiently deep and ice-free; a removed pump should be cleaned and stored as the manufacturer directs.
