Professional Floating Surface Skimmer for Large Ponds and Lakes

The Oase Skimmer 250 Eco is a floating surface skimmer for large garden ponds, with a manufacturer-rated maximum pond surface of 250 m². Its wide inlet draws surface water and floating coarse debris through a flap; the 27 litre stainless steel basket retains the debris and the integrated pump returns the water to the pond.

Oase specifies a maximum flow of 15,000 litres per hour and 140 W power consumption for this model, SKU 95438. The operating instructions state a 40% energy saving compared with the previous model. These are manufacturer ratings, not a measured result for every installation: wind, water movement, positioning and how full the basket becomes all affect collection in use.

How the floating skimmer works

1. The floating body follows changes in water level, keeping its skimmer flap at the surface.
2. The built-in pump draws pond water and loose surface debris through the 520 mm inlet. Coarse debris is caught in the removable 27 litre basket.
3. Water leaves through the pump outlet and returns to the pond. The basket needs regular emptying for the inlet to keep working freely.

This is a surface-debris collector, not a substitute for suitable pond filtration or a treatment for algae already growing in the water.

Where to position it

Position the skimmer where prevailing wind and water movement bring loose leaves, blossom, pollen or duckweed towards its opening. Keep the inlet clear of the bank and dense planting, and choose a position where the basket can be reached safely for regular emptying. The 250 m² figure is Oase’s maximum rated pond surface, not a promise that every part of a pond will be cleared at the same speed.

Floating installation and anchoring

The unit floats and adjusts to changes in water level. Oase’s instructions show the two supplied wire cables anchoring it either to the bank or to the pond bottom. Follow the illustrated bracing angles in the manual so the skimmer remains in position; do not use the electrical cable as an anchor. Route that cable without strain and keep its plug dry.

For outdoor electrical installation, Oase requires a qualified electrician and an RCD rated at no more than 30 mA. The pump must be submerged or flooded before it runs and must not be connected to a dimmer.

Suitable use and limits

This model is intended for cleaning the surface of garden ponds within Oase’s stated water-quality and technical limits. It suits larger ornamental ponds where wind-blown coarse debris regularly gathers on the surface. Oase’s operating instructions explicitly exclude swimming ponds and industrial use; do not use it where people are in the water.

Basket care and winter storage

Empty the collection basket regularly and rinse it with clean water when needed. Clean the float and pump with clean water and a soft brush if debris builds up. If skimming becomes weak, check whether the basket is clogged or the flap is sticking before assuming the pump has failed.

Disconnect this unit and all other electrical equipment in the water before reaching into the pond or carrying out maintenance. The skimmer is not frost-proof: if freezing temperatures are expected, remove it, drain and clean it, then store it dry and frost-free as Oase instructs.

Practical questions

How much electricity does it use?

Oase rates the pump at 140 W. At that rated draw, 24 hours of continuous running equates to about 3.36 kWh; 30 such days equate to about 100.8 kWh. Multiply by your own electricity tariff for an indicative cost. Actual consumption and cost depend on how long the unit runs and its real operating draw.

Will it clear every patch of duckweed?

The skimmer collects loose debris that reaches its surface inlet; it cannot guarantee that all floating material across a pond will travel to the basket. Positioning for the prevailing wind and current, and regularly emptying the basket, matter. Skimming does not treat the underlying cause of weed or algae growth.

What should I check if the surface draw weakens?

Oase’s fault guide points first to a clogged basket, a skimmer body riding too high, or a sticking flap. Isolate the equipment before inspection, empty the basket and check that the flap moves freely; follow the manual if the problem continues.

Can I use it in a swimming pond or leave it out through frost?

No. Oase’s instructions exclude swimming ponds. The unit is not frost-proof and must be removed, drained, cleaned and stored dry in a frost-free place when freezing temperatures are expected.

Can the collection basket and floating flap be replaced?

Yes. Oase lists a replacement basket (part 33752) and floating flap (part 22329) in the spare-parts diagram for model 95438. Check the current Oase diagram before ordering; these parts are not included as extras with the skimmer.
