Liquid flubendazole treatment for skin and gill flukes

NT Labs Koi Care Flukasol is a liquid suspension of flubendazole for treating skin and gill flukes in koi ponds. This 250ml bottle treats 9,100 litres at the manufacturer’s standard dosing rate. It provides a measured liquid alternative to preparing a powdered fluke treatment, with specific instructions for shaking, application, UV operation and observation during the treatment period.

Choose Flukasol for an identified fluke problem. Flicking, excessive mucus, gasping and lethargy can prompt investigation, but these signs are not a diagnosis on their own. NT Labs recommends confirming a suspected infestation through microscopic examination where possible. Water-quality checks are also part of the preparation, because unsuitable water conditions need attention when investigating fish health.

What the bottle contains

The active ingredient is flubendazole at 727.4mg per 100ml. Flukasol is a suspension, which makes thorough shaking an essential part of measuring a representative dose. Settled material must be dispersed before treatment is measured out. Check that the bottle is within its expiry date and follow the manufacturer’s guidance on how long an opened bottle remains suitable for use.

This listing is for one 250ml bottle. The smaller size is useful when its coverage meets the requirements of your pond, while a larger pond or an appropriate repeat course may require more treatment. Pack size describes the amount supplied, not a different formulation or dosing rate. Calculate the amount needed before ordering, including any treatment plan agreed following diagnosis.

Dose and coverage

The published dose is 10ml per 364 litres, or 80 imperial gallons. The following examples apply that rate to a single application. Use the actual volume of water being treated, allowing for the way your pond and connected filtration system are arranged. A nominal pond capacity may differ from the operating water volume.

The full bottle is only the correct quantity where the measured water volume calls for 250ml. For other volumes, calculate a proportionate dose. Keep litres, millilitres and gallons clearly separated in your notes, and remember that the gallon figures used here are imperial gallons. Read the current bottle label before each course in case the manufacturer has revised its directions.

Shaking and applying Flukasol

NT Labs instructs users to turn the bottle upside down in good light and shake it until no sediment remains on the bottom, then continue shaking for at least one minute before dosing. This is more specific than a quick shake immediately before pouring. Have your measuring equipment ready so the treatment can be measured after the contents are properly mixed.

Mix the required quantity with pond water in a clean bucket, then distribute it evenly over the pond surface. Use equipment reserved for pond care and keep a written record of the dose and application date. Plan to be present after treatment so you can observe the fish and respond if their behaviour gives cause for concern. NT Labs specifically advises treating when you have time to watch the fish.

UV filtration and aeration

Switch UV filtration off for seven days after adding Flukasol and aerate the pond well throughout treatment. The UV instruction is not a direction to switch off the entire filtration system. Identify the UV control before starting and make a note of when the seven-day period ends. Check that the air supply is operating properly rather than discovering a problem after medication has been added.

In its troubleshooting guidance, NT Labs also asks users to check that chemical filtration media such as activated carbon and zeolite have been removed. Identify the media actually fitted in your filter and follow the current treatment directions. If you are unsure how the instructions relate to your particular installation, obtain advice before changing equipment or applying medication.

Repeat courses and temperature restrictions

Do not use Flukasol above 30°C or in hot, humid or thundery weather. Do not mix medications. These restrictions matter when choosing when to treat; suitable bottle coverage does not establish that the current conditions are suitable for application.

If improvement is limited after seven days, review the diagnosis, water quality, calculated volume, measured dose, UV setting and product condition before deciding to repeat. NT Labs requires seven days between doses and a partial water change before re-treatment or another medication. Its dosing guidance allows up to four doses where needed, rather than recommending four doses automatically. Gill fluke life cycles can affect the treatment course, so reassessment is preferable to assuming that every pond needs the same sequence.
