Male Fern (Dryopteris filix-mas) is one of the most recognisable and reliable native ferns found in British woodland and damp garden habitats. Known for its strong upright growth and rich green foliage, this classic fern brings structure, texture and natural character to shaded areas of the garden, particularly around ponds and wildlife friendly planting schemes.

The plant produces robust, leathery fronds that emerge in spring and gradually expand into large architectural foliage. Each frond is finely divided into neat pinnate leaflets, creating a dense and attractive display that adds depth and softness to shaded planting areas. Mature plants form handsome clumps of upright foliage that can reach between 90 cm and 120 cm tall, with a spread of up to 90 cm.

Male Fern works particularly well when planted near ponds, streams and damp borders where the soil remains consistently moist. The dense foliage provides excellent shelter for wildlife, making it a valuable addition to wildlife pond environments. Frogs, toads and beneficial insects often use the protective cover of the fronds to rest, hide and regulate temperature during warmer months.

Dispatching Your Pond Plants

Your Male Fern will be carefully packed to protect the foliage and roots during transit.

Orders received by 11am Monday to Wednesday are normally dispatched on the following working day using a next working day courier service. During busy periods, dispatch may occasionally take an extra day.

To avoid plants being held in depots over a weekend, we do not usually dispatch on Fridays. Highlands and Islands orders using a two day service are not normally dispatched on Thursdays.
