Lady Fern Pondside Plant (Athyrium filix-femina)

Elegant native fern with delicate light green fronds perfect for shaded pond edges, damp gardens and wildlife friendly planting schemes.

Lady Fern (Athyrium filix-femina) is one of the most graceful and attractive native ferns found in the UK. Known for its soft, lacy fronds and fresh light green colour, this beautiful woodland plant is ideal for damp, shaded areas around ponds, streams and wildlife gardens. Its finely divided foliage creates a delicate texture that contrasts beautifully with broader pondside plants, making it a fantastic addition to natural planting schemes.

This hardy native fern naturally grows in woodland glades, damp hedgerows and shaded riverbanks across Britain. Because of this, it is perfectly suited to pondside planting where the soil remains consistently moist but not waterlogged. When planted around the edge of a pond or within a bog garden, Lady Fern creates a soft, natural look while providing excellent cover for wildlife.

The arching fronds grow in elegant clumps and gradually form a gentle mound of foliage that moves beautifully in the breeze. The light green leaves emerge fresh each spring and remain attractive throughout the growing season. As the fronds mature they can reach heights of around 45 cm to 50 cm, with plants spreading naturally to around 60 cm to 90 cm wide.

Although Lady Fern does not produce flowers, its ornamental foliage provides year round interest during the growing season. The dense clumps of foliage offer valuable shelter for frogs, toads, insects and other wildlife that benefit from shaded, damp habitats around ponds.

Athyrium filix-femina grows best in moist, humus rich soil in partial shade or full shade. While it prefers shaded conditions, it can tolerate more sunlight than many other ferns provided the soil remains consistently damp. This makes it an extremely versatile plant for planting around ponds, beneath trees or along shaded garden borders.

Lady Fern is extremely hardy and can tolerate temperatures well below minus 20°C, making it a reliable and long lasting plant for UK gardens. Once established it requires very little maintenance and will return each year with fresh growth in spring.

This plant is particularly effective when planted in groups around pond edges, wildlife ponds or damp garden borders where its delicate foliage softens the transition between water and land.

🇬🇧 UK-grown aquatic plant: Grown at a dedicated aquatic plant nursery in the South of England and carefully prepared for delivery across the UK.
