Kockney Koi 1.5 Inch Foam Block Insert

A pre-filter finger for compatible solvent-weld fittings and foam blocks

The Kockney Koi Foam Block Insert provides a slotted support for a suitable pre-filter foam block. Its finger-shaped body allows water to enter along the insert, while the connection end fits the appropriate Kockney Koi solvent-weld arrangement. It is intended for pond keepers building or maintaining a foam pre-filter assembly, including arrangements made with compatible tees and bends.

This listing is for one plastic insert. Foam, pipe, fittings, pump and jointing materials are separate. The insert gives the foam a supporting structure and a connection to the pipework; the surrounding foam provides the mechanical filtering surface. It is therefore useful to check both parts of an existing assembly before ordering a replacement. A worn foam block and a damaged plastic insert are different items.

What the insert does

In a suitable assembly, water passes through the foam before entering the slotted finger and continuing through the connected pipework. The foam catches material according to its grade and condition. The insert itself should not be treated as a complete pond filter, nor as a substitute for the biological filtration required by the pond.

Kockney Koi describes this design as suitable for creating pre-filter foam block arrangements using its compatible pipes and fittings. The manufacturer also describes the finger as a filter cage that helps prevent fish entering pipework. That application still needs careful assessment: a cage with openings is not an assurance that every size of fish, fry or other pond animal will be excluded. Check the actual opening size against the livestock and installation.

Match the connection before assembling

The manufacturer identifies this as a 1.5-inch solvent-weld fitting. Match it to the corresponding pipework system rather than selecting a fitting by appearance alone. Pond plumbing includes waste pipe, pressure pipe, threaded connectors and flexible hose, and the same nominal size does not make all of those connections interchangeable.

Check the existing socket or fitting and compare its dimensions before committing to a joint. The insert is not a universal push-on fitting for flexible pond hose. If you are replacing a component from a different manufacturer’s assembly, confirm that the mating connection and foam bore suit this particular part. Retain the old component while making that comparison.

For the wider installation, browse our black waste solvent-weld pipe. Choose all the parts as a compatible system. Avoid using excessive force to make a mismatched component seat: a secure-looking dry assembly can still be unsuitable for a permanent joint.

Select a suitable foam block

Kockney Koi lists its own 4 x 4 x 10-inch pre-filter foam block for use with its pre-filter inserts. That foam is drilled centrally to an internal depth of 9 inches. It is a separate component: this page supplies the plastic finger only. If you already own a different foam block, compare its opening and internal depth before using it with the insert.

The foam needs an internal opening that accommodates the finger without tearing, excessive compression or a loose gap around the support. Check its bore, internal depth and overall condition. Do not assume a solid foam sheet or an unrelated replacement filter pad will fit simply because it can be cut to the same outer size.

Choose the foam grade for the intended task and available maintenance access. Finer foam can collect smaller particles but may require more frequent attention as debris builds up. The useful cleaning interval depends on the pond and installation, so observe the flow rather than relying only on a fixed date in the calendar.

Leave enough room to remove the foam for cleaning. An arrangement that fits tightly into a corner may be difficult to service once the surrounding pipes, pump and filter components are installed. Plan that removal space before fixing the pipework in its final position.

Building and maintaining the assembly

Switch off and isolate the relevant equipment before working on the pipework. Follow the pump and filter instructions for draining or opening the system. Support the assembly while handling it so that the insert and adjoining joint are not carrying the weight of unsupported pipe or a heavy wet foam block.

Where a permanent solvent-weld joint is required, use the correct preparation and jointing method for the materials involved. If you are considering Weld-On Wet R Dry 725 PVC Solvent Cement, check its material suitability against every part of the joint. Follow the solvent manufacturer’s directions for application, ventilation and curing before returning the system to service. Keep jointing material away from the foam and the slotted working area of the insert.

After reassembly, check that the foam is seated properly and that normal circulation has returned. Inspect accessible joints for leaks and watch for a reduction in flow. Do not leave a pump running against a blocked intake or allow it to run dry; follow the equipment’s own operating limits.

Routine inspection

Check the foam for accumulated debris and the plastic finger for damage whenever the assembly is serviced. Clean the foam using a method appropriate to its role in the system, and inspect the slots for trapped material. Replace a damaged insert rather than relying on an improvised repair that could come loose inside the pipework.

A pre-filter is one part of a pond’s maintenance routine. Continue to check the main filter, circulation and pond conditions, and investigate repeated blockages rather than simply fitting progressively finer foam. Keeping the assembly accessible makes these routine checks much easier.
