Kockney Koi 3 inch filter cage for 82mm solvent-weld pipe

This Kockney Koi filter cage fits the manufacturer’s 3 inch / 82mm solvent-weld pipe system. It provides a guarded end for suitable pond pipework, helping stop fish from swimming back into a pipe. The same fitting is described by Kockney Koi as a vent cowl, so you may see either name when checking a replacement.

Choose it by the actual pipe system and diameter, not simply by the words three inch. The manufacturer reference is 003156 and the Oasis supplier reference is SW032. This listing is for one cage; pipe, connectors, solvent cement and any additional supports are separate.

Kockney Koi describes the fitting as weather-resistant and UV-resistant for outdoor use. It is intended to provide a durable guard in a compatible installation. Those material properties do not provide a pressure rating for a complete pipe run or establish a maximum pump flow.

Where a pipe-end cage can help

An open pipe end may allow fish to enter pipework where they should not be. A suitable guard creates a barrier while leaving openings through which water can pass. This is particularly relevant when planning accessible pond returns and similar connections where fish can reach an otherwise open pipe.

Check the opening size against the fish you keep. A guard suitable for larger fish must not automatically be assumed to exclude fry or every small animal. We do not publish an aperture measurement or a flow limit for this model because the manufacturer information available for this listing does not specify those figures.

This cage is not a biological filter or a fine mechanical filter. It does not replace the filtration needed to manage suspended waste and water quality. It also does not act as a non-return valve: it guards an opening rather than closing a water path when a pump stops.

Check the 82mm fit before ordering

The quoted 82mm dimension is important. Imperial pressure pipe, metric pressure pipe and waste pipe can use different outside diameters despite similar nominal inch labels. Read the pipe markings, check the system documentation and measure an accessible straight section before choosing a replacement.

Do not measure across the outside of a socket or elbow and treat that as the pipe diameter. The fitting body is normally wider than the pipe it accepts. If the existing pipework has been adapted between systems, identify the connection at the exact point where the cage will be fitted.

For smaller compatible pipework, see the separate Kockney Koi 1½ inch / 2 inch filter cage. That product is an alternative size, not an adapter supplied with this three-inch model.

Plan for maintenance access

Position the guarded end where it can be inspected and cleaned. Leaves, blanketweed and other debris may collect against a cage, reducing its open area. A fitting that is easy to reach is much easier to keep clear than one hidden behind fixed pipework or placed in an inaccessible part of a filter bay.

Consider the whole pipe route before joining components. Leave room to inspect nearby joints and to remove surrounding equipment for servicing. Where a removable connection is needed, select an appropriate matching union arrangement; do not assume a permanently solvent-welded assembly can later be pulled apart.

Support the pipe independently so the end fitting is not carrying unnecessary weight or being pulled out of alignment. Browse our pond building supplies for compatible pipework components, checking the size and joint type of every part.

Installation and safe operation

Stop and isolate connected equipment before working on a live water circuit. Follow the pipe and solvent-cement manufacturers’ instructions for preparation, joining and curing. Do not return a newly joined section to service before the specified cure conditions have been met.

A pipe-end guard alone does not establish that a pump suction arrangement is safe for fish. On an intake, water velocity, total open area, blockage risk and the equipment manufacturer’s intake requirements all matter. Use the pump’s specified intake protection and avoid creating a concentrated suction point accessible to fish.

Once the system is running again, inspect nearby joints and check that water movement remains normal. Recheck after the first period of use and whenever debris levels increase. A sudden change in flow deserves investigation rather than assuming that the pump itself has failed.

Cleaning and common questions

How often should I inspect it? Build inspection into your normal pond maintenance, with more frequent checks during leaf fall or heavy weed growth. The right interval depends on the amount of debris reaching the fitting.

Can it stop water flowing backwards? No. Fish exclusion and water backflow are different functions. A correctly selected valve is needed where the system design requires backflow control.

Will it fit any three-inch pipe? No. Match the manufacturer’s 82mm solvent-weld system. Similar names do not guarantee compatible physical dimensions.

Is a smaller cage supplied too? No. This is a single three-inch cage. Smaller sizes and other fittings are purchased separately.
