Kockney Koi Airline Reducers – Twin Packs

Join different airline sizes with an 8mm-to-4mm or 12mm-to-8mm fitting

Kockney Koi airline reducers connect two different sizes of flexible airline. Choose the 8mm-to-4mm version when connecting an 8mm line to a smaller 4mm line, or the 12mm-to-8mm version where your layout changes between those two bores. Each option is supplied as a pack of two reducers of the selected size. The stepped connections give each hose its own correctly sized end, avoiding an improvised joint between mismatched tubes.

These fittings are useful when the main airline route and the final connection use different hose sizes. For example, an existing larger airline may need to connect to a short smaller-bore section serving suitable equipment. The reducer makes the physical connection; the air pump, hose route and diffuser must still be suitable for the intended flow and water depth.

Choose the correct pair of sizes

  • 8mm to 4mm – pack of 2: connects 8mm airline to 4mm airline. Each fitting has a larger end for the 8mm hose and a smaller end for the 4mm hose.
  • 12mm to 8mm – pack of 2: connects 12mm airline to 8mm airline. Select this when both sides of the joint use these larger sizes.

The pack is not a mixed selection: both reducers match the size option you choose. Measure or check the stated internal bore of the airline on each side before ordering. Some hose descriptions show internal and external measurements together, so comparing only the largest printed number can lead to an incorrect fitting.

If you need the larger pump-connection size, see our separate Kockney Koi 20mm to 8mm Airline Reducer. That is a different product supplied singly. It should not be confused with either twin-pack option on this page.

Choosing airline for the installation

For 4mm and 8mm hose routes that need to sit down in the water, compare our Standard Sinking Airline and Evolution Aqua Heavy Duty Sinking Airline. Select the matching internal bore on the airline page, then measure the route to establish the length required. Hose and any clips or other accessories are sold separately from these reducers.

A reducer does not make ordinary hose sink. Our Black Braided Airline can be used where its bore matches the selected fitting, but it is not sinking airline. Choose the hose around both the connection size and how you want to route it; a weighted hose and a non-sinking hose serve different installation needs.

What happens when you reduce the airline bore?

A smaller connection does not increase the amount of air the pump produces. Reducing the hose bore changes the resistance of the air route, so an arrangement that works with a short connecting section may behave differently with a long run of smaller hose. Water depth, hose length, bends and the diffuser also affect the load on the pump.

Check the pump manufacturer’s guidance before changing a high-output system to a substantially smaller airline. Keep the main run appropriately sized for the installation, and avoid adding multiple reducers where one planned connection would do. If you need to distribute air between several outlets, use an appropriate manifold or branch arrangement with suitable flow adjustment rather than expecting a reducer to divide the supply.

Making a secure connection

First identify the two hose sizes and match them to the two ends of the reducer. Allow enough slack to reach the connection without stretching the airline. Position the joint where you can inspect it and where nearby equipment will not press or pull against it during routine maintenance.

Follow the air pump’s instructions before disconnecting the airline. Where fish depend on that pump, maintain suitable aeration while the work is carried out. Cut the hose ends square and inspect them carefully. Split, hardened or badly stretched tubing should be replaced rather than reused for the new joint.

Push each sound hose end securely onto its matching connector. Check that both ends fit snugly and that the hose has not kinked immediately beside the reducer. Do not force an incorrect bore onto the fitting. Support heavier hose runs so that their weight is not constantly bending the connection or pulling the smaller line away.

Checks after installation

Restart the air supply and check the connected diffuser or air stone. Compare its bubbling with normal operation and inspect accessible connections for escaping air. If performance is poor, check for kinks, a clogged diffuser or excessive hose length as well as loose joints. An apparently secure reducer cannot compensate for a pump or airline route that is unsuitable for the operating depth.

These reducers are open connectors, not shut-off taps or non-return valves. They do not prevent water travelling back through the airline when the pump stops. Follow the pump manufacturer’s installation guidance and retain any appropriate backflow protection already required by your system. Inspect the connection during routine maintenance, replacing damaged fittings and keeping the unused reducer clean as a spare.
