Genuine Fish Mate Replacement Filter Foams
Choose the correct genuine Fish Mate replacement foam by the filter model and the manufacturer’s spare-part number. These foams are shaped for particular Fish Mate filters, helping restore the intended water path when the old media is damaged or no longer holds its shape. They are replacement parts for an existing filter, rather than a complete filtration system or an upgrade to a different pond capacity.
Two options are available here: part 245 for the Fish Mate 2500 GUV and 5000 GBIO gravity filters, and part 272 for the Fish Mate 5000 PUV pressure filter. Part 272 includes the replacement piston as well as the foam. The two options are not interchangeable, even though both filter families contain a model with “5000” in its name.
Which foam do I need?
| Spare-part number | Confirmed filter application | Supplied part |
|---|---|---|
| 245 | Fish Mate 2500 GUV, model 226C; Fish Mate 5000 GBIO, model 228 | Replacement filter foam |
| 272 | Fish Mate 5000 PUV, model 265 | Replacement filter foam and piston |
Read the filter’s identification label before choosing. GUV and GBIO identify the gravity-filter applications above; PUV identifies the pressure-filter application. A gravity box and a sealed pressure filter have different internal arrangements. The shared pond-volume number does not make their media equivalent, and the shape of the old foam should be a secondary check rather than the only way to identify it.
For older equipment, check the manual’s spare-parts list as well as the model name. If its part number is not shown in this table, do not choose the nearest-looking option. A previous owner may have fitted cut-down foam, or the original media may have become misshapen over time. The filter reference and specified spare-part number provide a better starting point.
What replacement foam does
Foam provides a mechanical stage within the filter, retaining suspended debris as water passes through it. Its fit matters: water needs to follow the filter’s intended route rather than finding a gap around the edges. A replacement cut to the correct form makes it easier to maintain that arrangement without packing several unrelated pieces into the housing.
Foam still needs routine cleaning. Fitting new media does not remove the need to maintain the pump, check the water path and clear accumulated waste from the filter as instructed. If flow has fallen, look at the whole circuit before assuming that the foam alone is responsible. A blocked intake or obstructed outlet can also affect how the system behaves.
When should the old foam be replaced?
Inspect the old media during normal maintenance. Tears, crumbling edges or a permanent loss of shape are reasons to consider replacement. Dirty foam that remains structurally sound may simply need the cleaning procedure described in the filter manual. Avoid treating discolouration alone as proof that a serviceable foam must be discarded.
Check the surfaces around the foam while it is removed. Debris left in corners can interfere with seating, and damaged supports need attention before the filter is reassembled. If the original part has become compressed, compare the new genuine replacement against the specified installation arrangement rather than forcing it into the old distorted shape.
Fitting the replacement
Follow the instructions for the exact Fish Mate filter. Isolate the associated electrical equipment before opening or dismantling the system. For a pressure filter, stop the pump and release pressure as directed before undoing the lid. Do not open a sealed filter while it is being supplied by a running pump.
Note the position of the existing components before removing them. Fit the new foam and, for the 272 option, its piston in the arrangement required by the manual. Do not add extra foam layers merely to make the chamber look fuller. The space and movement inside the filter form part of its design, and overpacking can obstruct the intended water path or cleaning mechanism.
Inspect seals and mating surfaces during reassembly. These foam options do not include a replacement lid seal, UV lamp or complete service kit. If a separate part is worn, identify and replace it by the correct reference. Restore circulation according to the manual and check the filter and connections carefully for leakage before leaving the system running unattended.
Care after maintenance
Use the cleaning method and interval recommended for the filter, adjusting attention to the amount of waste the pond produces. Feeding, falling leaves and seasonal conditions can all change how quickly the mechanical stage collects debris. Keep a maintenance note so that unusual changes in flow or cleaning frequency are easier to notice.
Clear-looking water does not confirm that water chemistry is satisfactory. Continue checking the pond after filter maintenance, especially if other media has also been disturbed or replaced. Our NT Labs Pond Lab Multi-Test Kit brings together routine pond-water tests, while the Pond Lab Mini Test Kit covers pH, ammonia and nitrite for a smaller testing kit.
Check before ordering
Confirm the filter name, model number and spare reference, then choose either 245 foam or 272 foam and piston. Keep those details with the pond’s maintenance records for next time. The listed application is model-specific: neither option is a universal foam for other brands, nor does fitting it increase the rated size of the existing filter.
