Evolution Aqua K3+ Advanced Filter Media 50 Litres
Large-format UK-made media for moving beds, static chambers and DIY filter conversions
Evolution Aqua K3+ is a larger 25mm floating filter medium designed for biological moving beds, static filtration and bespoke filter conversions. Its size makes it easier to retain behind coarser screens than K1 Micro, which is valuable in large chambers, home-built filters and retrofits where very small media could escape through existing slots or outlets.
Each piece is approximately 25mm in diameter and 10mm long. Evolution Aqua states a total surface area of 800m² per m³ and a protected surface area of 500m² per m³. Minerals are incorporated during manufacture to encourage stable biofilm development. The 50-litre bag is the current standard pack.

Planning a K3+ chamber
Allow headroom for the media to expand and tumble rather than packing the vessel solid. Position diffusers so the whole bed turns without stagnant corners, and size the air pump from the vessel depth and media volume. Outlet guards and screens must retain 25mm media even when pieces approach them edge-on.
For the smaller high-area media used in Nexus Eazy and compatible bead or static stages, compare Evolution Aqua K1 Micro. Browse more pond filter media or choose an appropriate air pump and diffuser for a moving-bed chamber.
Starting and maintaining the biofilm
- Rinse new media in clean water without detergents.
- Confirm screens, drains and outlets will contain the 25mm pieces.
- Add only the amount the chamber can move freely.
- Run strong, evenly distributed aeration continuously in a moving bed.
- Increase fish load and feeding gradually while testing ammonia and nitrite.
- Do not disinfect mature media or wash it in untreated chlorinated tap water.
Frequently asked questions
Is K3+ the same as K+ Media?
No. K3+ is the larger 25mm format with 500m²/m³ protected surface area; K+ is much smaller and has a different structure and surface-area specification.
Can K3+ be used in a moving bed?
Yes. It is floating media intended for moving-bed and static applications, provided the chamber, air and retention screens are suitable.
How much media should I add?
Follow the filter or vessel design. A moving bed needs empty volume so the media can tumble; filling a chamber completely prevents correct operation.
Does it arrive biologically mature?
No. New media is clean plastic. Beneficial bacteria colonise it gradually in an oxygenated operating filter.
Why choose K3+ instead of K1 Micro?
The larger pieces are easier to retain in DIY chambers and conversions. K1 Micro offers greater surface area and finer mechanical capture where the filter is designed for it.
