BSP Elbow Hosetails for Pond Hose Connections
A threaded elbow hosetail turns a compatible hose connection through 90 degrees close to the equipment port. It is useful where a straight adaptor would leave the hose pointing into a wall, across an access route or towards the edge of a filter bay. Select the thread type and hose bore together: the male and female versions connect to different ports and are not interchangeable.
Each option is one elbow adaptor. Hose, clips, sealing materials and equipment are separate purchases. These fittings are selected by their connection dimensions, rather than by a universal claim that they fit every pond pump. Check the specification of the pump, filter or threaded fitting you intend to connect before ordering.
Choose the complete connection combination
| Connection option | Reference |
|---|---|
| 3/4 inch BSP male to 25mm hose | PN005H |
| 1 1/4 inch BSP male to 32mm hose | PN005F |
| 1 1/4 inch BSP female to 32mm hose | PN009J |
| 3/4 inch BSP male to 3/4 inch hose – 90 degree elbow | PN005G |
| 1.5 inch BSP male to 1.5 inch hose – 90 degree elbow | PN005FF |
| 1.5 inch BSP female to 1.5 inch hose – 90 degree elbow | PN009JJ |
| 2 inch BSP male to 2 inch hose – 90 degree elbow | PN073 |
The thread measurement and hose measurement describe separate ends of the adaptor. For example, PN005H has a 3/4 inch BSP male thread and takes 25mm hose, whereas PN005G has the same nominal thread size but takes 3/4 inch hose. Read both parts of the selected option rather than choosing solely from the first number. The table also identifies which end has an external male thread and which has an internal female thread.
When is an elbow preferable to a straight tail?
An elbow can make a compact installation easier to arrange when the hose needs to run alongside the equipment. It can also avoid forcing flexible hose into a very tight bend immediately after a straight connector. A kinked hose restricts the water path and can pull against the fitting, so the layout around the connection matters as much as choosing the right nominal size.
That does not mean adding elbows throughout a system improves its performance. Every change of direction contributes resistance, and a simple, supported hose route is generally preferable to an unnecessarily complicated one. Use the elbow where the direction change is needed, keep the rest of the run smooth and follow the connected equipment’s permitted flow and hose arrangements.
Understanding the thread and hose measurements
BSP stands for British Standard Pipe. The nominal inch thread size is a connection designation, not a direct measurement of the outside diameter with a ruler. Identify the port from its documentation or from a correctly identified existing fitting. A connector should start squarely and freely; force is not a way to make different thread standards fit.
Hose selection uses the hose’s internal diameter. A 25mm or 32mm hose tail therefore requires the matching nominal hose bore, not hose with that outside measurement. Wall thickness changes the outside diameter and affects the clip size you need. Check that the hose is suitable for the equipment and service conditions as well as being the right diameter.
Plan the direction before fitting
Allow room to fit the adaptor, tighten the hose clip and remove the connection later. Consider where the hose will sit when it is full of water. Its weight should be supported independently rather than hanging from a small plastic port. Leave enough slack for routine servicing without creating a loop that kinks or traps the hose beneath other equipment.
Do not assume an elbow can be loosened on its thread to obtain the desired direction while still making a reliable seal. The correct sealing method and final position depend on the receiving connection. Follow the equipment instructions, using the specified sealing arrangement; a flat washer joint and a thread-sealed joint work differently. No particular washer or sealing compound is promised with these fittings.
Installation and leak checks
Isolate the relevant equipment and drain the section before disconnecting pipework. Inspect the threads and hose for damage, remove debris and make sure the adaptor starts without cross-threading. Fit the appropriate hose clip before pushing the hose fully onto the tail. Secure it without crushing the fitting or cutting into the hose, then support the finished hose run.
Our hose clips and stainless steel hose clips provide options for securing compatible hose. Choose a clip whose working range covers the outside diameter of the hose when it is fitted over the barb. A clip size should not be selected from the hose’s internal diameter alone.
Restart the system according to its instructions and inspect both ends of the adaptor under normal operating conditions. If a joint leaks, isolate it again and check the cause. Repeatedly applying more force can damage a thread, distort a seal or crack a port. Look for hose strain, incorrect sealing materials and mismatched sizes before deciding that the connector simply needs tightening.
Alternatives and what to check before ordering
If the hose can leave the port in a straight line, compare our straight 1 1/2 inch threaded hosetail or stepped threaded hosetail. Those links are alternative fitting types and sizes, not direct replacements for every option on this page.
Before adding a fitting to your basket, confirm the thread size, male or female connection, hose internal diameter and clearance for the elbow. This listing does not assign an unverified pressure or temperature rating. For a pressurised or specialist installation, use a fitting with documented ratings that meet the complete system requirements.
Additional thread and hose combinations
| Complete connection | Supplied quantity |
|---|---|
| 3/4 inch BSP female to 1/2 inch hose — 90 degree elbow | One elbow |
Read the thread, male or female connection and hose bore together. These are additional choices in this same connection family; the complete selected combination determines the fitting to order. Hose, clips and separate flow-control equipment are not included.
