Four useful magnification settings

Total magnification comes from the eyepiece and objective working together. With the included 10x eyepieces, the 4x objective gives a 40x image; the 10x gives 100x; and the S40x gives 400x. The S100x objective provides 1,000x when used with the appropriate immersion-oil technique.

The binocular head lets you view through both eyes. It does not double the magnification: using two 10x eyepieces with a 40x objective still gives 400x. Starting at a lower setting makes it easier to locate an area of interest before moving to a higher objective for a closer look.

Controlled movement across the slide

The mechanical stage holds the slide and moves it along two axes using its controls. This helps you scan a preparation methodically instead of repeatedly pushing the slide by hand. Centre the area you want to inspect before increasing magnification so it is easier to find again within the narrower field.

Euromex’s BioBlue manual describes placing the slide under the mechanical holder with its cover glass facing upwards. The stage controls then move the specimen into alignment with the objective. Follow the supplied instructions for setting the slide protection mechanism, particularly when using the high-power objective close to the preparation.

Binocular viewing and focus adjustment

Adjust the spacing between the eyepiece tubes to suit your eyes. The manufacturer’s setup guidance describes the correct result as a single circular field, rather than two overlapping circles. This adjustment is individual, so it is worth resetting when a different person uses the microscope.

Coarse and fine focus controls provide larger movements for locating the image and smaller adjustments for bringing detail into focus. Euromex recommends beginning with a low-power objective, then progressing to higher magnification. Keep the instrument on a firm, level surface so movement of the table does not interfere with observation.

The oil-immersion objective is a separate technique

The S100x objective is designed for oil immersion. Reaching 1,000x involves the correct oil and the procedure in the manual; it is not simply another dry viewing setting. The working distance is small, making the slide protection adjustment and careful fine focusing particularly relevant.

Read the complete immersion section before using this objective. The manual also explains cleaning the front lens after use and avoiding oil contact with the other objectives. If you mainly need lower-power observation, the 4x, 10x and S40x objectives provide their stated total magnifications without adopting the S100x immersion method.

Illumination and the condenser

Adjustable LED illumination supplies light from below the specimen. The Abbe condenser and iris diaphragm are used to control the light reaching the preparation. Adjusting the image involves more than turning brightness to its highest setting; illumination and focus should be set to suit the specimen and selected objective.

The BB.4260 is an optical binocular model. It is not the BioBlue LCD or an integrated-camera version, and this listing does not include a screen or recording system. If image capture is a priority, choose the imaging arrangement before ordering rather than assuming that every BioBlue model has the same digital features.

Planning a pond-care workspace

A microscope provides a view of a prepared specimen; identifying what you see still depends on suitable preparation and interpretation. Keep specimen notes and relevant pond observations together. Water chemistry remains a separate check: the Colombo Pond Test Lab Professional provides several water measurements that a microscope cannot supply.

The manufacturer’s published BB.4260 dimensions are 360mm high, 176mm wide and 227mm deep. Leave additional working room for slides, the power connection and your hands. For a comparison with another binocular instrument already in our range, see the Motic C20 LED microscope and compare the exact optical and mechanical specification.

Care and storage

The BioBlue manual recommends supporting the stand and base when moving the microscope, rather than lifting it by the stage or focusing knobs. Keep it away from damp, dust and strong vibration. Fit the dust cover after use and leave the eyepieces and objectives mounted to reduce dust entering the optical system.

Use appropriate lens paper and the manufacturer’s cleaning method for the optics. The manual warns against applying cleaning solvent directly onto an objective lens. Keep the supplied instructions with the instrument; the Euromex BioBlue support page provides access to the manufacturer’s learning resources for the range.
