Meadowsweet (Filipendula ulmaria) is a beautiful British native perennial that brings height, fragrance and wildlife value to bog gardens, damp borders and the areas surrounding ponds. Naturally found growing in damp meadows, alongside streams, on riverbanks and in other moisture-retentive habitats, Meadowsweet is an excellent choice for creating a naturalistic transition between your pond and the surrounding garden.

During spring, Meadowsweet produces fresh green, fern-like foliage that develops into an attractive bushy clump. As summer arrives, tall upright stems rise above the leaves and carry masses of tiny creamy-white flowers arranged in distinctive frothy flower heads. The flowers have a pleasantly sweet fragrance and normally appear from June through to August, sometimes continuing into September when conditions are favourable.

Where to Plant Meadowsweet

Meadowsweet prefers consistently moist, moisture-retentive soil and is ideal for bog gardens, damp borders, stream edges and planting around ponds. Although associated with wet habitats, it should generally be treated as a moisture-loving pondside plant rather than a submerged marginal plant.

For best results, plant in damp soil that retains moisture without leaving the crown permanently submerged. This makes Meadowsweet particularly useful immediately outside the aquatic planting zone of a pond.

It grows successfully in full sun or partial shade, although maintaining adequate soil moisture is particularly important in sunnier positions.

Caring for Meadowsweet

Once established in a suitably damp position, Meadowsweet is generally easy to care for. The main consideration is preventing the soil from completely drying out, particularly during prolonged periods of warm weather.

Cut back old flower stems and tired growth after flowering or leave the seed heads and stems standing for additional winter structure before cutting the plant back later. As a herbaceous perennial, above-ground growth naturally dies back during the colder months before returning from the root system in spring.

Established clumps can be divided when necessary to control their spread or produce additional plants.

Dispatching Your Meadowsweet Pond Plant

Our pond and moisture-loving plants are dispatched according to the season and their natural growth cycle. As Meadowsweet is a living herbaceous perennial, its appearance can vary considerably throughout the year.

Plants purchased during spring and summer may arrive with active foliage, stems and potentially flowers or developing flower buds. During autumn and winter, Meadowsweet naturally dies back and may therefore arrive with little or no visible growth above the compost. This is completely normal, with fresh shoots developing again as growing conditions improve.

Plants are selected and packed carefully for their journey, but some trimming may be carried out before dispatch where required to protect the plant during transport.
