Kusuri Filter Starter Booster
A ready-to-use bacterial culture for starting and recovering pond filters
Kusuri Filter Starter Booster contains beneficial nitrifying and denitrifying bacteria for use in new or weakened pond filters. It is particularly useful at spring start-up, after chemical treatment, after adding fish or after a deep clean has reduced the filter’s biological population.
Dose at 100ml per 1,000 litres. The 500ml bottle covers 5,000 litres per application, the 1 litre bottle covers 10,000 litres and the 5 litre container covers 50,000 litres.
What this product is designed to do
- Ready-to-use beneficial filter bacteria.
- Supports conversion of ammonia and nitrite through the nitrogen cycle.
- Useful after medication, adding new fish or restarting a seasonal filter.
- Can be used with salt according to current Kusuri retailer guidance.
- Three sizes cover normal garden ponds through to large koi systems.
How to use it well
- Shake the bottle before use.
- Dose at 100ml per 1,000 litres, following the current label.
- Apply directly to the filter chambers or distribute as directed.
- Switch UV clarification off for three days after dosing unless the current pack says otherwise.
- Repeat weekly for the course appropriate to new installation, spring start-up or post-treatment recovery.
Always calculate the real water volume and follow the current label supplied with the product. Pond volumes should allow for shelves, stonework, filter chambers and pipework. Never increase a treatment dose simply because the water has not changed as quickly as expected.
Important checks before use
- Bacterial products work most efficiently above 15°C.
- Continue dosing and take corrective action if ammonia or nitrite remains detectable.
- Do not add untreated chlorinated tap water to the pond.
- Maintain strong aeration through the filter and pond.
Test water before treating. Ammonia and nitrite should be zero in a mature stocked pond, while pH and KH should be stable. Treatments can support a sound system, but they cannot compensate for inadequate circulation, oxygen, filtration or excessive feeding.

Build it into a sensible pond-care routine
Compare Cloverleaf Absolute Bio Gel and the full filter-starter range. Use reliable pond water test kits while a biofilter develops.
For a new or damaged biofilter, reduce feeding and stock pressure until ammonia and nitrite remain at zero. Bacteria can accelerate recovery, but water tests determine whether the pond is actually safe.
Frequently asked questions
