Choosing the 80cm bowl

The stated 80cm measurement is the bowl diameter, not a recommended fish length. Allow room around the koi for controlled movement and for the inspection you intend to carry out. Its body depth and the water level matter as well as its length. A fish that only just fits across a container does not have a suitable working space.

Compared with the Koi Pro 67cm bowl, this model has a stated diameter 13cm greater. That difference may be useful when choosing your working area, but it also means allowing more room beside the pond and in storage. Neither diameter establishes a litre capacity, so do not calculate treatment quantities from the product name.

Prepare the inspection area before catching the fish

Decide what you need to check and arrange the equipment before introducing the net. Place the bowl on a stable, level support when using it outside the pond, prepare suitable pond water and keep the route clear. Have your camera or record sheet ready if you intend to document the fish’s condition.

For a first handling session, arrange help from someone experienced. A second person can manage equipment while you concentrate on the koi. Avoid starting an inspection when you cannot stay with the fish or when the next stage of its transfer is still being organised.

Guide the koi calmly into position

Blue Ridge Koi recommends slow movements with a pan net and avoiding repeated chasing. Use the net to guide the fish while it remains supported by water, rather than lifting it from the pond in the net. Maintain enough water in the viewing bowl to cover the fish and supervise it throughout.

Inspecting and photographing koi

For useful photographic records, prepare the camera settings beforehand and keep the fish submerged. Record the date and the reason for inspection alongside the images. Try to use a consistent viewing angle for later comparison, but finish the session promptly rather than repeatedly repositioning the koi for a perfect picture.

Temporary holding and cover selection

A similar-looking cover for the 67cm model is a different accessory. A fitted net cover helps contain a jumping fish, but does not replace supervision or management of the water.

A viewing bowl is temporary handling equipment. If fish need to remain away from their pond for ongoing care, prepare an appropriate holding or quarantine system with suitable filtration and aeration. There is no universal safe holding time determined by an 80cm diameter alone.

Using the bowl before transport

The National Koi Show’s transport guidance uses a bowl as a preparation stage before bagging and boxing. For a journey, arrange correctly sized fish bags, protective boxes and an appropriate oxygen supply in advance. Plan the transport method for the actual fish and journey rather than treating an open viewing bowl as complete travel equipment.

After use, remove debris and follow an appropriate fish-equipment cleaning routine. Check the interior and rim before the next session and store the bowl where it cannot collect garden chemicals or be damaged by tools. A clean, undamaged working surface should be part of every preparation check.
