iT3 PVC Solvent Cement – Choose the Formula for Your Pipework
These iT3 cements join compatible PVC pipe and fittings when building or repairing a pond filtration system. Choose N-40 for a slower-curing rigid-PVC formula, N-35 for a quick-setting rigid-PVC gel, or Bluefast for flexible-PVC connections. Each formula is available in a 250ml or 500ml pack with an applicator. The formula matters as much as the pack size: choosing a larger bottle does not make an unsuitable adhesive compatible with a different plastic.
A solvent-weld connection is permanent. It is useful for fixed plumbing runs where a sound, correctly prepared joint is needed, but it does not replace a removable union beside equipment that needs servicing. Before starting, decide which connections should remain accessible and which can be permanently joined. That small amount of planning makes subsequent pump removal, filter maintenance and winter alterations much easier.
Compare N-40, N-35 and Bluefast
| Formula | Manufacturer-described use | Pack choices |
|---|---|---|
| N-40 | Slower-curing solvent cement for rigid PVC pipes and fittings, including drainage and pressure applications | 250ml or 500ml with applicator |
| N-35 | Quick-setting, thixotropic gel for rigid PVC; the manufacturer includes potable-water pipework among its applications | 250ml or 500ml with applicator |
| Bluefast | Fast-drying, thixotropic solvent cement for flexible PVC; designed to accommodate wet application conditions | 250ml or 500ml with applicator |
Thixotropic describes how a gel behaves during application; it is not a claim that the product can bridge an incorrectly sized socket. Bluefast’s wet-condition suitability also does not mean that it can be poured into a running pond or used as an underwater patch. Stop the flow and prepare the joint according to the supplied instructions. Do not confuse Bluefast with the separate iT3 Bluetite formulation.
Check the Pipe Material Before Buying
Check the markings on the pipe and the fitting, not just their colour. PVC pressure pipe, ABS waste fittings, polypropylene hose connectors and polyethylene pipe are different materials. These options are listed for the specific PVC applications above; this page does not approve them for every plastic used around a pond. Similarly, the words flexible PVC mean a compatible solvent-weld pipe system, not any flexible pond hose.
If you are extending an imperial system, compare the existing pipe with our imperial pressure pipe and matching fittings. Do not substitute a metric fitting simply because its stated number looks close to the imperial size. A correct material match and correct socket fit are both needed before cement is applied.
Plan the Layout and Removable Connections
Lay out the complete run before opening the cement. Check that elbows face the intended direction and leave room to reach valves, pump unions and filter drains. Mark the required insertion position and alignment so you can assemble the joint without guessing. A plain pressure-pipe union provides a deliberate separation point; it is preferable to cutting out a glued section whenever equipment needs attention.
Where a device has a threaded inlet, use the appropriate plain-socket to male-thread adaptor or a correctly matched pump union. Cement belongs on compatible plain solvent-weld surfaces. It should not be used as thread sealant, spread over an O-ring, or allowed to enter the moving parts of a valve.
Preparing and Assembling a Joint
For N-40 and N-35, iT3 describes a square-cut pipe with its outer edge bevelled to aid insertion. Remove cutting debris and use the cleaner specified for the chosen cement to prepare both mating surfaces. Keep cleaned surfaces free of dirt and grease. Apply the cement evenly with a suitable brush and follow the current label for coating, insertion and holding instructions.
The N-40 and N-35 technical sheets call for joining without twisting and holding the assembly steady, then removing excess cement promptly. Arrange supports before bonding so the pipe does not sag or pull against the joint while it sets. Keep adhesive away from the open pond, filter media and any containers holding fish. Work in a ventilated area and follow the safety information supplied with the particular formulation.
Setting Time Is Not the Same as Return-to-Service Time
The N-40 and N-35 sheets say that joints should not be moved or stressed during the first five minutes and should not be exposed to pressures above 1.5 atmospheres within 24 hours. Those instructions are not a promise that every pond installation can be filled after five minutes. Pipe size, conditions and the system’s service requirements still matter. Follow the applicable current label and technical sheet before filling or pressure-testing.
Do not transfer the N-40 or N-35 timing to Bluefast. A fast-drying description alone does not establish a universal commissioning time. Allow the required cure, inspect the finished plumbing and carry out a controlled leak check before returning the installation to normal operation. Never try to strengthen a leaking, pressurised joint by smearing extra cement over its outside.
Choosing a Pack and Storing the Remainder
The 250ml and 500ml options refer to the amount of cement supplied, not the pipe diameter or number of guaranteed joints. Consumption changes with socket size and the work involved, so count the connections in your planned installation rather than relying on a fixed coverage figure. Close the container promptly between uses and keep the applicator clean.
Store the original labelled pack according to its instructions, away from heat and sources of ignition. Do not thin a thickened product with an unrelated solvent or mix formulas. This purchase contains one selected cement pack; pipe, fittings, cleaner, removable unions and any additional tools are separate items. Check the selected formula and volume in your basket before ordering.
