What does a bypass bung do?

A drum filter separates its incoming water from the filtered side using a screen. A bypass provides an alternative route around that screen. The bung closes the bypass opening when that route is not being used.

The Filtreau drum manual describes red bypass caps in the internal partition wall. This is a different job from a cap fitted to an external pipe end: identify the part within the filter before choosing a replacement. Follow the operating instructions for your particular filter when using its bypass facility.

Choosing the correct size

The two options have different stated diameters, so colour is a useful reference rather than a reason to treat them as interchangeable. Keep the old part available and compare it with the required option.
