Burtons 10 Inch 3 Stage Pond Dechlorinator with Cartridges

Three-stage tap-water protection for koi ponds, garden ponds and regular top-ups

The Burtons 10 Inch 3 Stage Pond Dechlorinator with Cartridges is designed to treat mains water before it reaches a pond. Tap water is disinfected for human use, but chlorine and chloramine can irritate fish and damage the beneficial bacteria that keep a biological filter working. Passing top-up water through a correctly maintained purifier is a simple way to reduce that risk.

This 10-inch unit uses three replaceable stages: a 5 micron sediment pre-filter, granular activated carbon (GAC) and a carbon-block (CTO) cartridge. The sediment stage catches dirt and larger particles before they reach the carbon media. The GAC and CTO stages then provide the contact area used to reduce chlorine, chloramine and other impurities.

Our practical advice: run the purifier slowly enough for the media to work. A large hose and high mains pressure can push water through too quickly, reducing contact time even though the flow looks impressive.

Key specifications

  • Recommended flow: 6 litres per minute
  • Indicative cartridge life: approximately 6 months or 9,100 litres
  • Connection: 1-inch female BSP thread
  • Three replaceable stages: 5 micron sediment, GAC and CTO carbon block
  • Suitable for pond filling, routine top-ups and water changes
  • Manufacturer guarantee: 1 year

Installation and first use

Connect the inlet to the mains-water supply and the outlet to a clean hose leading to the pond. Keep the purifier upright and supported, check every housing and connection for leaks, then run water through for a few minutes before directing it into the pond. This initial flush primes the cartridges and removes loose carbon fines.

Do not leave the purifier outdoors where trapped water can freeze. Freezing can crack the housings or fittings, so drain the unit and bring it into a frost-free location when temperatures fall below 0°C.

When should the cartridges be replaced?

The stated capacity is a guide rather than a promise. Actual life depends on the incoming water, flow rate, frequency of use and chlorine or chloramine concentration. Replace the full cartridge set by the manufacturer interval, sooner if testing shows breakthrough, or whenever the media has been stored for an extended period after use.

A purifier can look clean while the carbon is exhausted. We recommend checking the treated water with a suitable chlorine test instead of judging cartridge life by appearance alone.

Frequently asked questions

Can I connect this directly to a garden hose?

Yes, provided the fittings are correctly adapted and the flow is kept within the recommended rate. Check all joints before leaving the unit unattended.

Does the purifier replace liquid dechlorinator?

It can treat water during normal filling and top-ups when it is correctly sized and maintained. Keep a liquid conditioner available for emergencies or situations where water must be added faster than the purifier can safely treat it.

Can I use the cartridges beyond six months?

Do not assume the media is effective because water still flows. Follow the replacement guidance and verify the outlet water with a chlorine test.

Should I flush new cartridges?

Yes. Run water through for a few minutes before the first pond use to prime the media and clear harmless carbon dust.

Can the unit be left outside in winter?

No. Drain it and store it somewhere frost-free whenever freezing conditions are possible.

Which size should I choose?

Choose from the amount of water you normally add and the time available to deliver it at the recommended flow. The 20-inch model offers greater media capacity for larger ponds and frequent top-ups.

Compare sizes and keep the three stages serviceable

For a larger koi pond, more frequent top-ups or a slower, less restrictive fill, compare this compact unit with the Burtons 20 Inch 3 Stage Pond Dechlorinator. The larger housings provide more media capacity, but both sizes still need to be run within their stated flow and capacity limits.

When performance falls or the service interval is reached, use the correct PRE, GAC, CTO and KDF replacement cartridges rather than guessing from appearance alone.
