Aquatic Soil 20 Litre | Pond Plant Compost for Aquatic Baskets

A peat free aquatic planting soil for pond plants, waterlilies, marginal plants and deep water planting baskets.

Specialist aquatic soil for clean, stable pond planting

Aquatic Soil 20 Litre is a specialist pond planting soil designed for potting aquatic plants into pond baskets, waterlily baskets and marginal planting containers. It provides a stable, low nutrient planting medium that supports healthy root growth without the problems often caused by standard garden compost in ponds.

Normal multi purpose compost is not suitable for pond planting. It is usually too light, too rich and too high in organic matter. When placed into water, it can float, break apart, cloud the pond and release excess nutrients into the water. These nutrients can encourage unwanted algae growth, especially in newer ponds or ponds that are already struggling with green water or blanketweed.

Aquatic Soil is heavier and more suitable for underwater use. It helps anchor pond plants securely inside aquatic baskets, giving roots a firm base while keeping the planting area tidy. This makes it ideal for potting marginal pond plants, waterlilies, deep water plants and other aquatic plants that need to be grown in baskets before being placed into the pond.

A 20 litre bag is a useful size for everyday pond planting jobs. It can be used for planting new aquatic baskets, repotting pond plants, dividing overgrown plants or refreshing old baskets where the soil has become compacted or depleted. It works particularly well with Finofil Aquatic Baskets, where the fine mesh helps retain the soil while still allowing pond water to circulate around the roots.

Using the correct aquatic soil helps create a cleaner and more reliable planting setup. Plant roots can access moisture, oxygen and nutrients, while the heavier soil helps reduce movement and disturbance once the basket is lowered into the pond. For the neatest finish, the soil can be topped with washed aquatic gravel before the basket is placed into position.

Aquatic Soil is suitable for wildlife ponds, ornamental ponds, koi ponds with planted areas, water gardens, raised ponds and container ponds. It is also safe for fish, frogs, newts and other pond wildlife when used as directed.

Reasons to buy Aquatic Soil 20 Litre

Aquatic Soil 20 Litre is a great choice if you want to plant pond plants properly and avoid the mess caused by ordinary garden compost. It is designed for use in water, making it much more suitable for pond baskets and aquatic planting.

It is especially useful when potting marginal plants or waterlilies into baskets. The heavier soil helps hold roots in place, while the lower nutrient content helps reduce the risk of feeding algae in the pond water.

This soil is also ideal for pond maintenance. If older baskets have become compacted, loose or overcrowded, repotting with fresh aquatic soil can help give the plants a better growing base.

It is a practical product to keep on hand if you regularly plant or maintain pond plants, especially when used alongside aquatic baskets, aquatic plant fertiliser and washed pond gravel.

How to use

Choose a suitable aquatic basket for the plant being potted.

Part fill the basket with Aquatic Soil.

Place the plant into the basket, keeping the crown at the correct level for that plant.

Add more Aquatic Soil around the roots and firm gently.

Do not over compact the soil, as roots still need access to water and oxygen.

Top dress with washed aquatic gravel if required. This helps hold the soil in place and gives the basket a neat finish.

Lower the basket slowly into the pond to avoid disturbing the soil.

Place the basket at the correct pond depth for the plant being grown.

Do not use standard multi purpose compost, peat based compost, manure based compost or lightweight potting mixes for pond planting.
