Gravel Bag is a practical pond planting accessory designed for topping aquatic plant baskets after planting. It is ideal for use with marginal pond plants, waterlilies, deep water plants and aquatic planting baskets where the soil needs to be held securely in place.

When pond plants are potted into aquatic soil or pond compost, the top layer can sometimes become disturbed as the basket is lowered into the pond. Fish, water movement and handling can also loosen the soil over time. Adding a layer of clean aquatic gravel over the top of the basket helps weigh the soil down, reduce movement and keep the planting area much tidier.

This is especially useful in ponds where the baskets are visible near the waterline. A gravel top dressing gives the basket a more natural, finished appearance and helps disguise exposed aquatic soil. It also makes planted baskets look neater in raised ponds, wildlife ponds, ornamental ponds, water gardens and container ponds.

Aquatic gravel is also helpful where fish may disturb plants. Koi, goldfish and other fish can sometimes nose around in pond baskets, loosening soil and exposing plant roots. Simply plant your pond plant into aquatic soil, firm it gently, then add a layer of gravel over the top before lowering the basket slowly into the pond.

Plants are not usually dispatched with gravel already added, as the extra weight can damage plants during transport and makes parcels heavier. This separate gravel bag allows you to finish the basket properly at home once your plants and baskets arrive.

How to use

Plant your pond plant into a suitable aquatic basket using aquatic soil or heavy loam.

Firm the soil gently around the roots.

Add aquatic plant fertiliser if required, following the fertiliser instructions.

Spread a layer of gravel evenly across the top of the soil.

Do not pile gravel too deeply over the crown of the plant.

Lower the basket slowly into the pond to avoid disturbing the soil.

Check after a few minutes and gently adjust any gravel if it has shifted.

For larger fish or exposed pond shelves, a slightly thicker top dressing may be useful, but avoid burying the plant crown.

Care and storage instructions

Store unused gravel in a dry place until needed.

Rinse before use if required, especially if there is loose dust in the bag.

Use only as a top dressing for planted baskets and pond planting projects.

Do not use large pebbles or heavy stones directly over delicate plant crowns, as this can restrict growth.

Check planted baskets occasionally and top up gravel if fish, water movement or maintenance has disturbed the surface.

When dividing or repotting plants, remove old gravel, refresh the planting soil if needed and apply a fresh top layer before returning the basket to the pond.
