The Aqua Master P160 Pro brings several water measurements together in a portable pen-style meter. It measures pH, electrical conductivity and temperature, with TDS and PPM display modes also available. The kit includes a storage case and calibration supplies, making it a practical option when you want to carry out readings at different sampling points rather than install a permanent monitor.

A replaceable electrode allows the sensing assembly to be renewed when required. The meter uses three AG-13 button batteries, supplied with the kit, and has a battery indicator and automatic switch-off after eight minutes. Its dimensions are 220 × 40 × 40 mm, with a stated weight of 102 g.

What the different readings tell you

pH describes how acidic or alkaline the sample is. Conductivity, displayed in mS/cm, describes its ability to conduct electricity. These are different measurements: a conductivity reading is not a substitute for a pH reading. Check which mode is selected before recording a result, particularly when moving between readings on the same sample.

Temperature can be displayed in Celsius or Fahrenheit. The meter’s specified temperature range is 0–50°C, and it includes automatic temperature compensation over that range. For a useful record, note the measurement mode and unit along with the reading, date and sampling location. Comparing like-for-like readings is more informative than keeping a list of figures without their units.

This meter’s listed functions do not include separate ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, chlorine, KH or dissolved-oxygen tests. It therefore forms part of a pond-testing routine rather than replacing every other test. Use the appropriate separate test when you need to assess one of those parameters.

The resolution tells you the increment displayed; accuracy describes the specified measurement tolerance. The EC accuracy is expressed as a percentage of full scale, so it should not be read as ±2% of whichever number is currently on the screen. Follow the supplied operating instructions when immersing and handling the meter; its IP67 rating is not an instruction to leave it permanently submerged.

The supplied calibration liquids let you check and calibrate the instrument. Keep them separate from the water sample and follow their storage and expiry information. Use fresh solution for calibration rather than returning used liquid to its original container.

First use and routine calibration

The P160 Pro manual specifies an initial twelve-hour soak in tap water before first use. Allow time for this preparation when planning your first testing session. Once the electrode is prepared, take readings with the meter upright and allow the display to settle before recording the result.

Calibration is part of maintaining the instrument, even though it is supplied calibrated. The manual calls for calibration after an electrode change, when more than a month has passed since calibration, with frequent use or when high precision is needed. Use the procedure and solution-temperature requirements in the manual supplied with your meter. Automatic temperature compensation during measurement does not remove the need to follow those calibration conditions.

Electrode care and storage

The P160 Pro electrode is designed for dry storage. Rinse it after use and follow the manual when cleaning and replacing the protective cover. Do not leave it soaking in distilled, reverse-osmosis or de-ionised water. The manual distinguishes cleaning the electrode from storing it in those liquids.

Handle the glass sensing parts carefully, avoid knocking them against a container and avoid sudden changes from very cold to hot liquid. When fitting a replacement electrode, check the seal and recalibrate afterwards. If the battery indicator appears or the display becomes faint, replace the batteries; low battery power can affect the reliability of readings. Store the meter and accessories in the supplied case between uses.
