A Complete Garden Transformation Built Around a Bespoke Koi Pond

This project was a full garden transformation, carefully designed around a bespoke koi pond that now forms the true centrepiece of the space. Located in Gravesend, the brief was not just to build a pond, but to completely rework the garden into a functional, well structured environment that could be enjoyed from multiple areas and viewpoints.

A Koi Pond Designed to Be Enjoyed

At the heart of the renovation is a custom built koi pond featuring two glass viewing windows. These add a real wow factor to the finished pond, allowing the koi to be viewed properly from within the garden rather than only from above. The windows turn the pond into a living feature, making the fish an active part of the space and creating a constant point of interest.

The pond was carefully positioned so it could be appreciated from different areas of the garden, with clear sightlines from both seating zones and the surrounding patio spaces.

Indian Sandstone Paving and Defined Seating Areas

The entire garden was paved using new Indian sandstone, completely transforming how the space is used. Rather than one large open patio, the layout was designed to create clearly defined zones, each with its own purpose.

One patio area is set up for outdoor dining, providing a practical and comfortable space for entertaining. A second, separate patio area was created for soft seating, positioned to take full advantage of the view across the pond. This gives the garden a relaxed seating area where the pond and koi can be enjoyed as part of the wider space, rather than feeling disconnected from it.

The choice of Indian sandstone ties the whole garden together visually, complementing the pond, brickwork, and planting while providing a durable and long lasting surface.

Integrated Garden Structures and Planting

Alongside the pond and paving, raised brick planters were constructed to add structure and definition to the garden. These planters help break the space up visually and provide practical areas for both ornamental planting and vegetable beds, allowing the garden to be productive as well as attractive.

A pergola was installed above the pond, adding height and architectural interest while helping to frame the pond as a feature. Over time, planting will soften this structure further, helping it blend naturally into the surrounding garden.

To improve privacy, screening was added along the top of the existing brick walls. This subtle addition makes a huge difference to how enclosed and peaceful the garden feels, without blocking light or making the space feel closed in.

A Garden That Will Mature Beautifully

While the transformation is already striking, this is a garden that will only improve with time. As the koi settle in, planting establishes, and the vegetable beds begin to thrive, the space will continue to evolve into something even more impressive.
