Takazumi Vital Koi Food
Floating food for condition support and cooler season feeding
Takazumi Vital is a complete floating koi food with a special premix, formulated by Takazumi for supporting fish condition. Its declared analysis includes 35% crude protein and 7% oils and fats. The manufacturer particularly positions Vital for use after transport and during the period from late autumn into early spring, when the fish are still feeding.
Choose from 1kg, 2.5kg, 4.5kg and 10kg packs. A smaller pack can be useful for a limited feeding period or a modest collection, while a larger size suits regular use across more fish. Takazumi instructs keepers to stop feeding at water temperatures of 4°C or below, including when using Vital as part of a winter feeding programme.
When to consider Vital
Takazumi describes a feeding period of two to three weeks after transport as one use for Vital. This gives the food a different role from a formula chosen primarily for maximum growth in warm water. Choose it as part of a suitable care and feeding routine, taking account of whether the fish are settled and actually eating.
Food supports nutrition; it should not be treated as a diagnosis or a substitute for investigating a fish that appears unwell. If a koi refuses food or its behaviour changes markedly, check the pond conditions and seek appropriate advice. Offering repeated extra portions will not resolve the underlying reason for poor appetite.
Composition and nutritional information
The manufacturer lists fish meal, fish and vegetable oils, cereals and cereal products, wheat germ, amino acids, natural minerals, trace elements and a premix. The premix is part of Vital’s formulation. Refer to the supplied pack for the full current declaration and feeding directions.

The analysis describes the food’s composition rather than the quantity to offer. Several foods can share some nutritional figures while having different formulations and intended uses. Compare the product’s role, temperature guidance and pellet behaviour alongside the protein and oil content.
Feeding in cooler water
Use a pond thermometer and base the feeding routine on the water, rather than the air temperature or the season’s name. Stop feeding Vital at 4°C or below. Above this point, offer food only when the fish are active and interested, and adjust portions as their response changes.
Cooler season feeding often requires more observation and less reliance on a fixed routine. A portion that was readily eaten during a mild spell may be excessive after a cold night. Start modestly, watch the response and remove accessible leftovers. Do not allow an automatic feeder to continue a summer setting without reviewing the amount delivered.
Using Vital after transport
Before focusing on food, ensure that newly introduced fish are being managed under your appropriate introduction or quarantine routine and that their water conditions are suitable. When feeding is appropriate and the fish are interested, offer a small, observable portion. Floating pellets make it easier to see which individuals are taking food.
During a planned period on Vital, note appetite and the amount eaten rather than simply counting days. A two to three week feeding period is the manufacturer’s suggested use after transport; it is not a guarantee that every fish will respond in the same way. Keep normal observation, water testing and care in place throughout.
Helping the whole collection reach the food
Watch the quieter koi as well as the first fish to reach the surface. Distributing small portions across an appropriate feeding area can reveal whether some fish are being crowded out. Avoid dropping the entire ration where wind or surface flow immediately carries it into a skimmer.
If a fish consistently feeds below the surface, a different feeding format may be worth considering. Takazumi EasyMix provides floating and sinking components. It is a different formula with its own purpose and directions, so compare it with Vital rather than assuming it has the same premix.
Choosing a pack for the feeding period
A 1kg pack is a convenient choice for a smaller collection or a short planned use. The 2.5kg option provides more food while remaining below the larger 4.5kg and 10kg sizes. Choose the quantity you expect to use while fresh, especially if temperatures are falling and the daily ration is likely to reduce.
For example, a measured total consumption of 50g a day uses 1.05kg over three weeks. This illustrates how to plan a pack quantity; it does not prescribe a ration for your fish. Actual consumption may be much lower or higher, and should change when appetite and water conditions require it.
Other foods in the Takazumi range
For everyday floating food with astaxanthin, compare Takazumi Gold Plus. For active feeding in warmer water, Takazumi High Growth has a different nutritional profile and a 15°C minimum feeding temperature. Takazumi Mix combines Gold Plus and High Growth.
Keep Vital closed in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Use a dry scoop and protect the pack from rain and pond splashes. Retain its label and best before information and follow the storage directions supplied. You can also browse our koi food range when planning seasonal changes.
