Stepped Hose Tails
Flexible pond hose adaptor for 40mm waste sockets and 1.5 inch pressure pipe conversions
Stepped Hose Tails are simple but very useful pond plumbing fittings for connecting flexible pond hose to rigid pipework. They are designed with a stepped barbed tail so one fitting can be trimmed or used with several common flexible hose sizes, making them handy for pond pumps, filter returns, UV installations, waterfalls, water features and general low pressure pond plumbing.
These hose tails are normally used to connect flexible hose into a 40mm black waste socket. That makes them useful when you need to bring flexible hose into a black waste pipe system, a filter bay waste fitting, a return line or a simple pond plumbing connection where rigid pipework is already installed.
The important extra point is that these stepped hose tails can also be used with 1.5 inch imperial pressure pipe fittings when the correct reducing bush or sleeve is used. If you add the 1.5 inch pressure to 40mm waste reducing bush / sleeve, the sleeve allows the hose tail to be fitted into a 1.5 inch pressure pipe socket, elbow, tee or other compatible pressure fitting. This is especially useful when you want a neat flexible hose connection on a pressure pipe system without changing the whole section of pipework.
Hose sizes this fitting is designed for
The stepped tail covers the most common small and medium pond hose sizes. Always check the internal diameter of your hose before ordering and secure flexible hose with a correctly sized hose clip for the best seal.
- 20mm flexible pond hose
- 25mm flexible pond hose
- 32mm flexible pond hose
- 38mm / 1.5 inch flexible pond hose
Because pond hose can vary slightly between manufacturers, the hose should be warmed or softened if needed and pushed fully over the correct step. Do not leave the hose sitting on the end of the fitting, as this can create leaks or allow the hose to work loose under flow.
Using this hose tail with 40mm waste pipe
For black waste pipework, this stepped hose tail is designed to fit into a 40mm waste socket. This makes it a useful adaptor when connecting flexible hose into black waste bends, tees, tank connectors or other 40mm waste fittings. It is a practical choice for pond returns, water feature feeds and general filtration pipework where flexible hose is being used instead of rigid pipe.
When working with waste pipe systems, dry fit the parts first, check the direction of flow and make sure the fitting can still be accessed later. Solvent weld joints should be prepared carefully and allowed to cure properly before the pond system is run.
Using this hose tail with 1.5 inch pressure pipe fittings
For 1.5 inch pressure pipe systems, this hose tail does not normally go straight into a pressure pipe socket on its own. It needs the correct sleeve. The 1.5 inch pressure to 40mm waste reducing bush / sleeve creates the transition between the 1.5 inch pressure fitting and the 40mm waste-sized hose tail.
This is useful when you want to connect flexible hose to a 1.5 inch pressure pipe elbow, tee, socket, valve or pipe run. It can be especially handy on smaller pump-fed systems, returns, water features or temporary pipework where flexible hose is easier to route than rigid pressure pipe.
If you need this conversion, select the optional 1.5 inch pressure to 40mm waste reducing bush / sleeve when ordering. For larger systems, high flow pump lines or koi pond filter bays, always check whether a dedicated threaded hose tail, union, pressure fitting or flexible pressure pipe connection would be more suitable.

Installation advice
Dry fit the hose tail and any sleeve or reducing bush before gluing. Check that the hose route is not pulling sideways on the fitting, as tension from flexible hose can cause leaks over time. Use suitable solvent weld adhesive where a permanent glued connection is required and allow the joint to cure before running the pump.
Flexible hose should be pushed fully onto the correct step and secured with a stainless hose clip where appropriate. If the hose is too tight, warming it slightly in warm water can make fitting easier. Avoid using excessive force that could split old or brittle hose.

For most pond installations, the best fitting depends on the pipe type, hose size, pump flow and how easy the connection needs to be to remove later. If you are joining flexible hose to a pressure pipe system, the pressure to waste sleeve is often the neatest way to use this stepped hose tail with 1.5 inch pressure fittings.
Useful hose clips and fittings
Stepped hose tails are commonly used with flexible pond hose, filter kits and UV clarifier pipework. For a secure connection, use the correct size Stainless Steel Hose Clips 10mm to 120mm.
