Pontec PondoMatic Pond Vacuum
A 1400W sludge vacuum with automatic collection and emptying
The Pontec PondoMatic is a compact pond vacuum for lifting settled sludge and loose debris from the bottom of a garden pond. Its 1400W motor draws dirty water into a 30-litre collection tank, then the machine automatically pauses suction to let the tank empty through its discharge hose. This makes it a useful option for periodic pond maintenance when you want to remove deposits directly instead of stirring them back into the water.
This is the UK PondoMatic, product code 50770, supplied with a 4m suction hose, 2m discharge hose, extension tubes and three cleaning nozzles. It is also described as the PondoMatic 3 by some retailers. The automatic timed cycle is worth understanding before you choose: it alternates between collecting and draining, so suction deliberately stops between cycles. For a comparison with other machines, see our Oase PondoVac Classic and Oase PondoVac 3 pond vacuum.
What is included?
- PondoMatic vacuum unit with 1400W motor and 30-litre collection tank.
- 4m suction hose for connecting the cleaning tubes to the tank.
- 2m discharge hose for draining the collected dirty water.
- Four extension tube sections.
- Adjustable universal nozzle with a 2–10mm opening.
- Algae nozzle and crevice nozzle.
- 4m electrical cable.
The different nozzles let you change the working end to suit the area you are cleaning. Fit the appropriate nozzle before starting and guide it slowly rather than trying to pull the vacuum tank around with the hose. The tank remains on stable ground beside the pond while the suction tube reaches the areas being cleaned.
How the automatic cycle works
Pontec’s operating instructions describe approximately 25 seconds of suction followed by approximately 25 seconds of emptying. During the suction phase, the machine collects sludge and water in the tank. It then switches off the suction motor, allowing the outlet valve to open and the contents to drain. The sequence repeats automatically while the machine is switched on.
The discharge hose must therefore run downhill to a suitable receiving area. The PondoMatic relies on gravity for emptying; it does not include a discharge pump for pushing the waste uphill. A kinked hose, blocked outlet or raised discharge end can leave water in the tank and prevent the next suction phase from working properly. Plan this route before cleaning, especially if your pond is surrounded by raised paving or retaining walls.
Choosing the nozzle for the pond floor
The adjustable universal nozzle can be opened to 10mm for a liner floor without pebbles and a thick sludge layer. Pontec describes the narrower 2mm setting for a liner with a pebble layer and sludge. Use the opening that suits the floor and avoid pressing the nozzle hard into the liner. For a thin sludge layer or a rigid preformed pond, the instructions advise turning the floor nozzle through 180 degrees.
The crevice nozzle is useful for narrower areas, while the algae nozzle gives you another option for collecting loose algae. Vacuuming removes material that the nozzle can reach; it does not replace the pond’s filtration system or prevent new organic matter accumulating. Work around planting baskets, stones and fish carefully, and clean in manageable sections so that you can see what the nozzle is collecting.

Setting up for effective cleaning
Place the vacuum on level, secure ground above the water level and at least 2m from the pond, as directed in the manual. Keep the suction hose as flat as practical and avoid unnecessary bends. A greater height difference between the water and the machine, or extra resistance through tubes and hoses, can reduce suction. The stated 2m maximum depth should therefore be considered alongside the actual layout of your pond and the position of the machine.
Use an appropriate outdoor electrical connection protected by a maximum 30mA RCD, keep plug connections dry and follow the supplied safety instructions. Do not operate the vacuum when anyone is in the water or leave it working in the rain. It is intended for pond sludge removal, not for collecting dry dust, sand, hot ash, flammable liquids or chemicals.
Cleaning, storage and ongoing care
After use, switch the machine off and unplug it before opening the tank or disconnecting components. Empty and rinse the container, clean the foam filter under running water and check the rubber valve at the discharge hose for trapped dirt. A dirty foam, blocked suction hose or debris around the outlet valve can all reduce performance. The machine must always be used with its filter fitted; replace a damaged filter with the correct original part.
Store the cleaned, empty vacuum in a dry, frost-protected place. Keeping the tank, hoses and valve clear between uses makes the next clean easier and helps the automatic draining cycle work properly. If you are choosing equipment for a larger pond or more frequent cleaning, compare the Oase PondoVac 4 and PondoVac 5 alongside this compact option.
