Pond Pump Pre-Filter Foam Cube 8 x 8 x 8 Inches
A mechanical pre-filter for a suitable pump intake arrangement
This foam cube provides a pre-filter around a suitable pump intake, catching debris in the foam as water passes towards the pump. SKS lists the outside dimensions as 8 × 8 × 8 inches. The off-centre opening shown in the supplier photograph needs to suit the pump and fittings you intend to use.
Choose this product by checking the physical arrangement and the pump’s instructions. It is supplied as a foam cube only, without a pump. Its dimensions describe the outside of the foam, not a universal pump compartment or an approval for every pond-pump model.

The centimetre dimensions are rounded conversions of the supplier’s nominal inch measurements. Check the space available around your installation rather than relying on a photograph to judge the cube’s scale.
What a foam pre-filter does
The foam acts as a physical barrier in the intake path. Material caught there remains in the system until the foam is removed and cleaned. This makes access important: a pre-filter hidden somewhere difficult to reach may be inconvenient to maintain even when it initially fits.
Mechanical capture is different from the biological processing of dissolved fish waste. A cube on the intake does not by itself establish that your pond has adequate biological filtration. Continue to assess the complete filter system and the water quality it is achieving.
Check fit before choosing a replacement
Measure your pump arrangement, including the inlet, outlet fittings and the route of the cable. Compare those measurements with the external cube size and check how the opening would sit around the equipment. The opening diameter is not specified in the supplier information, so confirm an uncertain fit before ordering.
Do not force the foam over fittings or arrange it so that it strains the cable or blocks parts of the pump that need clearance. Some pumps require their own cage or a model-specific intake accessory. The pump manufacturer’s instructions should determine whether this kind of pre-filter is appropriate.
Preserve water movement through the intake
A pre-filter loaded with debris can restrict the incoming water. Blagdon’s pump troubleshooting guidance identifies dirty pre-filter foam as one of the checks to make when output becomes poor. Inspect the cube according to the conditions in your pond, rather than assuming that a fixed cleaning interval will suit every installation.
After fitting or cleaning, observe the outlet and check that the system returns to its expected operation. Where a fountain or waterfall is involved, compare its performance under the same settings. A reduced output can have several causes, so the appearance of the foam is one part of the investigation.
If the flow remains low
Follow the pump’s maintenance instructions to check for debris at the intake and impeller. Also inspect accessible hose runs for kinks, crushing, leaks or obstructions, and check fountain outlets where fitted. These are separate potential restrictions; replacing the cube will not resolve a blocked outlet or damaged pump component.
Disconnect the equipment safely before removing the pre-filter or accessing the pump. Avoid improvising electrical repairs or using a chemical cleaner without confirming that it is suitable for the equipment and pond. If the problem persists, record the pump model and the checks completed before asking for further advice.
Cleaning and checking the foam
Remove retained debris during cleaning and inspect the cube for tearing, deformation or deterioration that would prevent it working as intended. Follow the relevant equipment instructions for the cleaning method. Refit it carefully and check that the intake arrangement remains secure.
Consider the wider source of recurring debris as well. Removing accumulated leaves and other waste from the pond can reduce what reaches the intake. Keep maintenance notes if the cube loads unusually quickly, particularly after seasonal leaf fall or changes to the pond.
Specifications that should not be assumed
SKS does not provide an exact pore grade, micron rating, opening diameter or pump-capacity rating for this cube. Its outside dimensions cannot be used to infer any of those figures. Where your pump needs an exact replacement foam, identify that part before substituting a general pre-filter.
Continue checking ammonia and nitrite with suitable equipment such as the Colombo Pond Test Lab Professional. Clear water and a clean intake do not prove that dissolved waste is being processed adequately.
