Oase IceFree 4 Seasons

A floating pond aerator, ice preventer and compact summer fountain in one unit

Oase IceFree 4 Seasons keeps a small area of the pond surface moving so oxygen can enter and fermentation gases can escape. Oase rates the winter function for use down to approximately -20°C. In warmer weather the same unit can be converted into a small decorative fountain, so it need not spend most of the year in storage.

In winter mode, the pump brings warmer water from deeper in the pond to the surface. Oase requires at least 80cm water depth for this use. The unit has no heating element: its operation depends on the pond water and the correct seasonal arrangement.

Use through all four seasons

  • Winter: maintain a local gas-exchange area during freezing weather.
  • Spring: add gentle circulation while the pond becomes active.
  • Summer: fit the fountain attachment for surface movement and decoration.
  • Autumn: remove leaves and clean the pump before sustained cold arrives.

Position the unit in adequate water depth, keep the cable protected and follow the manual for the seasonal configuration. A heavily stocked pond still needs appropriately sized aeration, filtration and routine water testing. IceFree is a useful winter safeguard, not a substitute for the complete life-support system.

Frequently asked questions

Will it keep the whole pond ice-free?

No. It is designed to keep a local gas-exchange area open.

Does it heat the water?

No. It uses circulation and surface movement rather than an immersion heater.

Can it be used in summer?

Yes. The supplied seasonal arrangement allows it to operate as a compact fountain.

Setting up IceFree 4 Seasons for your pond

Winter and summer use different arrangements

Follow the illustrated assembly instructions for the season. In winter, suspend the pump deeply but at least 10cm above the bottom, secure the float with a string and omit the filter bag. Fit it before frost. For summer, use the filter bag, one hose and a fountain nozzle; Oase specifies at least 40cm water depth and 40cm clearance from the bank. Keep the pump immersed.

Keep the spare seasonal components together with the instructions, rather than discarding the parts that are not used immediately. A labelled storage box makes the autumn changeover much easier. Check the arrangement again after moving the unit to another pond: a deeper winter position and a summer fountain position serve different purposes, so the previous hose arrangement should not simply be assumed correct.

Low power use, with a specific job to do

The pump’s rated input is 5W. Continuous operation for twenty-four hours uses approximately 0.12kWh. At an illustrative tariff of 25p per kWh, that is around 3p per day, or 90p over thirty days. These are calculations for this pump alone; use your actual electricity tariff and include the rest of your pond equipment when budgeting.

That small electrical load should not be confused with a large heating output. The unit moves water rather than adding controlled heat to the whole pond. A 5W circulating pump and a resistance heater are different tools, so comparing watts alone will not tell you which one meets your winter-care requirements. Check pond depth and intended use before considering running cost.

Plan access for checks and maintenance

Position the equipment so that you can inspect it from the bank and reach the electrical isolation point safely. Think about the route before winter vegetation dies back or snow covers the ground. Regular observation of the opening, water movement and the rest of the pond is still worthwhile even when the equipment has been installed correctly.

Oase recommends cleaning at least twice yearly and as needed. Disconnect electrical equipment before reaching into the water. Check the hose and pump for obstruction if flow falls. Clean gently and rinse thoroughly; follow the manual for dismantling and reassembly.

When a different heating product makes more sense

For a shallow pond that cannot meet the winter depth requirement, compare a suitable electrically heated ice preventer rather than treating this circulation system as interchangeable. For a covered koi pond where you want to hold a particular temperature, look at a properly sized heater or heat pump. Neither surface movement nor a small local ice-free area confirms that a chosen whole-pond temperature has been reached.

Browse our pond heating range to compare the approaches. If you would like help choosing, measure the depth where the unit will operate and calculate the pond volume. Tell us whether your priority is an opening during frost, a summer water feature or controlled winter water temperature. This helps narrow the choice to equipment that does the job you actually need.
