Blagdon Affinity Ice Vent Pond Heater
A compact 50W solution for keeping a small winter breathing hole open
The Blagdon Affinity Ice Vent is a low-energy pond ice preventer designed to maintain a small opening in the surface during freezing weather. That opening lets oxygen enter and allows gases from decaying leaves, fish waste and other organic matter to escape. It is suitable for smaller garden ponds and the Blagdon Affinity raised pools, with one unit normally considered for ponds up to about 5,000 litres.
Its 50W convection design uses substantially less power than many traditional 150–200W de-icers. The trade-off is that it is intended for typical UK winter conditions, maintaining an opening down to roughly –10°C, rather than the more severe conditions handled by the higher-powered Oase IceFree Thermo 200.

Preparing the pond for winter
Remove heavy leaf deposits before the coldest weather and keep the ice vent clear of dense floating plants. Connect it to a suitable RCD-protected outdoor supply and never leave connectors where they can flood. If the pond does freeze, do not hit the ice or pour boiling water over fish; use a controlled ice-opening method.
For larger or exposed ponds, compare the higher-powered options in our pond heating range. The best choice depends on pond size, depth, shelter and the lowest temperatures normally experienced at the site.
Frequently asked questions
Does it keep the whole pond ice-free?
No. It is intended to maintain a breathing hole around the unit.
Can it be used in a lined pond?
Yes, when installed as instructed and kept clear of damage. The heater should float in the water; do not trap the heated section against the liner.
Is 50W enough for every pond?
No. Its low running cost suits smaller, sheltered ponds. Large, shallow or very exposed ponds may require a higher-output solution.
