NT Labs Gleam Water Feature Cleaning Tablets

Ten cleaning tablets for ornamental water features without fish, plants or wildlife

NT Labs Gleam is a tablet cleaner for decorative water features that have become dirty, stained or green with algae. The resealable pack contains ten tablets. It is intended for cleaning an appropriate ornamental feature, rather than treating the water in an occupied fish pond. Before choosing it, consider where the feature drains and whether animals can reach the water.

Gleam is unsafe for fish, wildlife and pets. The manufacturer instructs users to remove fish and plants before cleaning, and warns against using the tablets while fish are in or around the feature. A fountain that returns to a fish pond, a wildlife pool or water regularly accessed by pets needs a different maintenance approach. Do not add Gleam to a shared pond circulation system.

Check that the cleaner suits your feature

A self-contained ornament normally has its own water reservoir and pump. Establish whether yours is genuinely separate from other water before treating it. A hidden pipe, overflow or return channel may connect a decorative section to a larger pond. Check that arrangement first, including where rinsing water will go when the cleaning is finished.

Also check the feature manufacturer’s care instructions. NT Labs recommends testing an inconspicuous area before treating the whole ornament. This matters particularly when you do not know the surface finish or when the ornament has been painted, sealed or repaired. A small test helps you assess suitability without committing the entire visible surface to treatment.

Manufacturer’s cleaning directions

After removing any fish and plants, dissolve one tablet for each 20 litres of water in the feature. NT Labs specifies a 24-hour soaking period followed by thorough rinsing with fresh water. Read the complete pack instructions before starting and follow the label supplied with your product.

Base the quantity on the water being treated, not the outside dimensions of the ornament. A hollow sculpture, reservoir, pebbles and internal equipment can make the actual water volume quite different from an external measurement. If the reservoir capacity is given in the feature’s instructions, that is a useful starting point; account for the amount actually filled for the cleaning process.

How much will a ten-tablet pack clean?

At the stated dose, one tablet treats 20 litres, two tablets treat 40 litres and five tablets treat 100 litres. The ten tablets therefore provide a total nominal treatment capacity of 200 litres when used at that rate. This is a dosing calculation, not a promise of a particular number of months between cleanings.

A small feature may use the pack over several separate cleaning sessions. The number of sessions depends on its water volume and the instructions followed. For volumes that do not correspond to whole tablets, consult the pack guidance or ask for advice rather than guessing how much extra cleaner to use. More product is not a substitute for measuring the treatment volume.

Prepare the work area before starting

Allow enough time for the full soak and subsequent rinsing. Move nearby items that could be splashed and keep animals away from the work area and treated water. Follow the feature and pump manufacturers’ instructions when disconnecting, draining or dismantling equipment. Keep any removed fittings together so that the original arrangement can be restored correctly.

NT Labs cautions against splashing clothing and furnishings and advises immediate washing with plenty of cold water if splashes occur. Read the handling precautions on the pack and keep the tablets in their labelled packaging. Prepare the rinse stage before treating the feature so that cleaning water cannot accidentally be directed into a pond or animal-accessible container.

Rinsing and returning the feature to service

Thorough rinsing with fresh water is part of the manufacturer’s cleaning procedure. Pay attention to places where water collects, including the reservoir and channels within the ornament. Check the equipment instructions before removing a pump or opening an impeller cover, and follow the product label for handling and disposal of used cleaning water.

When the cleaning procedure is complete, refill and reassemble the feature according to its own instructions. Check the water level and connections before restarting the pump. If a reduced fountain height or uneven flow remains, inspect for a blocked intake or another mechanical cause. A cleaner does not repair a worn pump, split hose or damaged electrical component.

Ongoing care and choosing the right treatment

NT Labs allows periodic use in features that contain no plants or fish. The suitability restrictions still apply: do not treat a feature visited by wildlife or pets as though it were an isolated ornament. Follow the pack’s directions rather than adopting an unsupported weekly or monthly dosing schedule.

Removing fallen leaves and keeping pump intakes clear can make routine feature maintenance easier. You can also compare NT Labs FountainShine Water Feature Cleaner and Blagdon Feature Clear when choosing a maintenance product. Each has its own application and instructions: do not transfer Gleam’s dose or soaking procedure to another cleaner. For an occupied garden pond, choose a treatment specifically suitable for its fish, plants and conditions. Gleam should be kept for the separate cleaning application described above.
