Small decorative reservoirs develop algae, slime, scale and odour quickly because they contain little water, warm rapidly and continually evaporate. Do not assume that a water-feature cleaner is safe for a fish pond. Many products in this category are intended only for ornamental features without fish, amphibians, pets drinking from the water or connected natural watercourses. Read the individual label every time.

Identify the problem before adding a treatment

Green water is suspended algae; slippery surfaces are normally biofilm or attached algae; white crusts are mineral scale; and unpleasant odour often points to stagnant, dirty water. A cleaner selected for the wrong problem may do little and can complicate later maintenance.

Remove leaves and sludge, clean the pump and restore circulation before dosing. Calculate the actual reservoir volume rather than guessing from its external dimensions, and account for rocks or decorative fill that displace water.

Safe use around people, pets and plants

• Check explicitly whether the product is safe for fish, wildlife, aquatic plants and pets.
• Never combine treatments unless both manufacturers confirm the combination.
• Measure accurately and keep concentrated product off stone, metal and planting unless approved.
• Prevent treated water entering drains, streams or wildlife ponds.

Can birds drink from treated water?
