Kockney Koi Yamitsu Hi-Flow 50 Air Pump
The Hi-Flow 50 is a 40W diaphragm air pump for pond and filter aeration. Its nominal output is 50 litres per minute, with a ten-tap chrome manifold supplied to distribute the air between several outlets. It is a useful option when you want to arrange several air stones around a pond or supply air to more than one part of a filtration system. The pump stays out of the water; airline carries its output to the submerged diffusers.
We recommend choosing an air pump around the working depth and the requirements of the diffusers, rather than pond volume alone. A shallow pond with several small stones presents a different load from a deeper installation with a restrictive diffuser. The 50 litres-per-minute figure is the nominal rating, not a promise of that output at every depth. Allow for resistance from the airline, valves and air stones when planning the system.

What comes with the pump?
The manufacturer specifies two spare diaphragms, two inlet/exhaust valve assemblies, the ten-tap manifold, a rubber joining piece and securing clips. These are useful service and connection parts, but this is not a complete installed pond aeration system. Choose suitable lengths of airline, non-return valves and air stones separately. Check the contents when unpacking and keep the service parts somewhere clean, dry and clearly labelled for this pump.
Distributing air between several outlets
The manifold lets you connect separate airline runs and adjust their air supply individually. This is helpful where stones are at different depths or where one short airline receives more air than a longer run. Start with the installation arranged as intended, then observe each outlet while making small adjustments. A row of identical tap positions does not necessarily produce an equal amount of air at every stone.
Leave the pump an adequate open air path through suitable diffusers. Closing most outlets to force air through a small stone can create unnecessary resistance and noise. An unused manifold outlet should be closed, but the outlets in service must still provide enough total capacity. The number of taps is a distribution feature, not a requirement to fit ten stones and not a guarantee that any ten diffusers will suit the pump.
Choose airline for the route
The supplied manifold is intended for 4mm airline. Measure each route with enough allowance for accessible connections and gentle bends. Avoid crushing the tube beneath paving, pinching it at a lid or stretching it tightly between fittings. A tidy route is easier to inspect later and reduces the chance of pulling a connection loose during other pond maintenance.
For underwater runs, compare the 4mm option in our standard sinking airline or Evolution Aqua heavy-duty sinking airline. Match the internal diameter to the manifold and diffuser fittings. Braided airline may also be suitable where its connections match, but it does not sink by itself. Airline is sold separately from this pump.
Positioning and first use
Use a firm, level surface in a dry, sheltered location with ventilation around the pump. Protect it from rain, splash and flooding rather than placing it in an exposed position beside the water. Keep the pump accessible for inspection and servicing. Electrical connections must remain dry and the installation must follow the manufacturer’s instructions; the pump must never be submerged.
Fit anti-syphon valves in the airline in the correct direction, following the arrows and the pump manual. Check every connection before starting. Observe the bubbles at each diffuser and listen for unusual vibration or strain. If an outlet is weak, investigate the tube route, valve direction and diffuser before assuming that the pump needs replacing. The manufacturer’s Hi-Flow instruction booklet explains installation and service requirements.
Power use and running costs
At its stated 40W input, 24 hours of operation equates to 0.96kWh. Multiply that by your own electricity unit rate to estimate daily electricity cost. For example, a rate of 25p per kWh gives approximately 24p per day. This is an illustration using the rated input and continuous operation, not a promised measured consumption or a quotation for your energy tariff.
Maintenance and choosing an alternative
Inspect airline and air stones regularly, particularly if the bubble pattern changes. Keep the pump’s air intake clean and arrange replacement of worn diaphragms or valves by a technically competent person. Disconnect the electrical supply before service work. If aeration is important to the pond’s normal operation, plan how it will be maintained while the pump is out of service.
For alternatives, compare the Charles Austen ET50 or Hiblow XP60. Compare their output at your intended working depth, power consumption and supplied accessories, rather than choosing solely by the model number. Spare parts are model-specific: Hi-Flow diaphragms should not be selected for a different pump simply because its advertised output is similar.
