Hi-Flow 4mm Airline Anti-Syphon Non-Return Valves – Pack of 25

These Hi-Flow anti-syphon valves are for compatible 4mm airline between an air pump and an air stone or diffuser. Their purpose is to let air travel towards the water while resisting water travelling back along the same tube towards the pump. This listing is for a complete pack of 25 valves, making it useful when you need to equip several small airline branches or keep matching replacements available.

A non-return valve is a small part of the installation, but it addresses an important problem: an airline can become a route back to the pump when power is switched off. The manufacturer describes these valves as stopping water travelling up the hose and back to the pump. Fit them as part of the arrangement specified by your pump manufacturer, and inspect them whenever you service the airline.

Check the size of the tube and the type of connection before ordering. The 4mm connection here is a small-bore airline connection. It should not be confused with a fitting for 4mm outside-diameter rigid tube, a larger sinking-airline connection, or a plumbing valve carrying pond water. A valve that looks similar in a photograph may have a different bore or fitting arrangement.

If you are replacing an existing valve, compare its connection size with the airline rather than relying only on its overall length. Old tubing can be stretched or split around a barb, so the condition of the tube matters as well as the nominal size. Do not force a larger or smaller hose onto a connection it was not designed to fit.

Choose the installation position carefully

Follow the instructions supplied with the air pump for its position relative to water level and for where a valve should sit in the line. A non-return valve does not make an unsuitable pump location suitable, or remove the need to keep electrical equipment protected as its manufacturer requires. Arrange the valve where it can be reached for inspection without pulling on the pump outlet.

Keep the airline route clear of sharp folds and trapped sections. Leave enough useful slack to lift an air stone for cleaning without tugging the hose off the valve. Where an airline passes a filter lid or pond edge, check that the moving lid or a heavy object cannot flatten the tube. A tidy installation should also be easy to inspect and maintain.

Connect it in the correct direction

A non-return valve works in one direction. Check its marking and the equipment instructions before fitting it; the airflow direction must run from the pump towards the diffuser. An incorrectly fitted valve can restrict the intended airflow rather than provide the required protection. Do not connect it simply by copying which end of an older, unmarked valve happened to face the pump.

Switch off and disconnect equipment as instructed before altering its connections. Cut the airline cleanly using a suitable tool, keeping your hands clear, and connect sound tubing securely to both ends of the valve. If a tube end is hardened, split or permanently widened, replace that section instead of relying on a loose connection. Check the finished route before restarting the pump.

Check the airflow after installation

Run the completed system and confirm that each connected diffuser is producing air. If a branch becomes noticeably weaker after a valve is fitted, stop and check the valve direction, tubing and connections. A kink, a loose joint or a clogged air stone can also affect performance, so work through the branch rather than assuming that a larger air pump is the immediate answer.

Where several branches share a manifold, their water depth, hose length and valve settings can affect how the air is distributed. A non-return valve is not an adjustable balancing tap. Use a compatible regulating manifold or air valve for airflow adjustment, and follow the pump instructions on keeping sufficient outlets open. Do not close every outlet on a running pump.

Maintenance and useful matching accessories

Include these valves in routine checks of the pump, airline and diffusers. Examine the connections for looseness and the tubing for deterioration. If a valve appears damaged, sticks or no longer operates as intended, replace it with the correct part. Keeping spares can make maintenance simpler, but a pack of replacements does not replace regular inspection of the installed system.

Our Kockney Koi 4mm airline connectors offer useful branch and direction changes for compatible small-bore tubing. Choose the connector shape to suit the route and remember that a plain tee does not automatically equalise airflow between different branches.

For larger pond-floor runs, compare standard sinking airline and heavy-duty sinking airline. Check their bore and fittings separately; this 4mm valve is not automatically suitable for those larger hoses. Our black braided airline is another option for compatible connections, but it does not sink.
