Elecro Optima Compact 3kW Wi-Fi Pond & Pool Heater

The Elecro Optima Compact 3kW is a premium connected electric heater for ponds, swimming pools and water features. Its titanium flow tube and titanium heating elements provide broad water compatibility, while the colour touch-screen controller allows the target temperature to be set between 0 and 45°C.

Built-in Wi-Fi and cloud connectivity allow temperature control and monitoring from a smartphone over Wi-Fi or 4G. This is useful for koi systems, hydrotherapy pools and managed installations where the owner wants visibility without standing beside the plant room.

Accurate control and layered protection

  • 3kW single-phase 220–240V model
  • Digital 0–45°C thermostat
  • Colour touch-screen interface
  • Wi-Fi / 4G cloud control from a compatible smartphone
  • Soft-start switching
  • Flow switch, control thermostat and manual-reset over-temperature safety
  • Titanium flow tube and titanium heating elements
  • IP44 enclosure and maximum working pressure of 4 bar

Flow and pipework

Elecro specifies a minimum flow of 1m³/h for Optima Compact models up to 6kW and a maximum flow of 17m³/h. The heater has 1.5-inch BSP female connections and is supplied with 50mm unions/hose-tail components. Install it in a clean, full-flow section of the return circuit as instructed, with isolation that does not allow the heater to operate dry.

Is 3kW enough?

Heater size depends on water volume, required temperature rise, heat loss, insulation, cover use and ambient conditions. A 3kW heater may maintain temperature in a well-covered system but perform very differently on an exposed pond in winter. Calculate the heat loss rather than selecting by water volume alone.

Compare other Elecro in-line pond heaters and use a suitable electrical installation. This equipment must be fitted by a competent person in accordance with current regulations.

Dimensions and installation

Frequently asked questions

Can I control it away from home?

Yes. The connected Optima Compact supports smartphone monitoring and control through its Wi-Fi/cloud system, subject to network availability and current app support.

Is it safe for salt water?

The titanium construction is intended for broad water compatibility, including saline applications within the manufacturer’s limits. Confirm the full system materials as well.

Can it be installed outdoors?

The enclosure is IP44, but the installation must follow Elecro’s siting, electrical and weather-protection instructions.

Does it include the electrical supply cable?

Electrical connection and protective devices must be specified for the exact model and installation by a competent electrician.

Planning an Optima Compact installation

Make space for servicing as well as the heater

Choose a dry, permanently weatherproof plant area with room to reach the screen, unions and electrical isolation. An IP44 rating does not make an exposed garden position suitable. Elecro permits wall or floor mounting, but the installer must follow the orientation and clearance diagrams supplied with the unit. Think about how the heater will be disconnected for maintenance before fixing the surrounding pipework in place.

Locate the heater after the filter so that suspended debris is removed before water enters it. Its installation instructions place it before chemical dosing equipment. The flow switch must be at the outlet: this is a direction-sensitive component, so the pipe route should be planned around the manufacturer’s diagram. The heater must remain full of water during operation, with air purged from the circuit before heat is enabled.

Understand the cost of 3kW heating

For budgeting, this 3kW resistance heater uses approximately 3kWh of electricity for each hour that its element operates continuously at rated output. Multiply that energy figure by your own price per kWh. At an illustrative tariff of 25p per kWh, one uninterrupted hour would cost approximately £0.75 for the heater alone. This is a worked example, not an estimate of your electricity tariff or a promise of daily running cost.

The thermostat may switch the element off for part of the day once the target is reached. Conversely, severe heat loss can keep it working for much longer. Circulation equipment consumes electricity separately. Compare whole-system costs over the intended season, and account for the pond cover, exposed surface area and insulation. If long periods of heating are expected, compare the installation space and operating conditions of our air source heat pumps before deciding between the two technologies.

Keep circulation and temperature control working together

A heater cannot compensate for a blocked filter, closed valve or air-filled pipe. Establish the specified water flow before asking the unit to heat, and maintain it while heating is enabled. A flow warning should prompt a check of the circulation system, rather than repeated attempts to reset the controls. For a koi pond, heating schedules also need to respect the separate requirements of filtration and aeration; do not assume a pool-oriented control programme is an appropriate schedule for the entire pond system.

App choice and seasonal care

Use the app specified for the serial number on your heater. Elecro distinguishes its TouchSmart and TouchSmart Plus generations, so an older online setup guide may show a different interface from a newly supplied unit. Keep the local controls accessible and commission the installation before relying on remote adjustments.

Plan servicing and winter shutdown with the installer. Elecro recommends periodic cleaning and inspection, and a heater taken out of use in freezing conditions must be drained as instructed. Switching off the electricity alone does not remove trapped water. Keep the Optima Compact installation manual with your commissioning information, and follow the version supplied with the exact heater for electrical protection, water chemistry and maintenance.
